Unexpected project...Infinty IRS Beta

Yep. I have products down at the shop that will take care of that. But I wouldn't want it on the cones before the gluing of the surrounds/dc takes place. Go ahead and do your thing Doug and I'll polish 'em up after I get 'em back from you.

With the vent-holes in the driver cones (as well as the air-gap on the VC) you need to keep the acoustic suspension intact by utilizing non-breatable dust caps. Somebody was making them for a while and selling on ebay. They had the Infinity epsilon logo embossed in them, but they are 4" as well. Lightweight felt and brush-on silicone or similar is prolly your best bet as long as the overall DC weight remains about the same.

Don't get em too shiny, you will want to use the speakers without the grilles and we all know what that leads to, pushed in dust caps.

Curious thing .........one side of BOTH the DVC Watkins woofers reads 0 DCR- the other side 3.16 ohms.....is this perhaps normal? Thanks for the compliment Ken.

Michael- when I get a project I am quite the "dog on a bone" about it- told the wife not to expect seeing me this weekend, sooo I humkered down in my design room and the rest is history! This was a fun project to take on, while it was work, it was also some what educational and rewarding. The whole time I was thinking....lucky bastard, he will be cracking a foundation somewhere and displacing more air than I have breathed in my whole liftime......I.E. I am quite elated for you.....

While you've got them apart, check all of the internal wiring. My first pair of Betas had two of the woofers wired out of phase in one tower. I always thought they sounded weird, spent hours checking, and checking... then when they needed refoamed, they got opened for the first time, and there was the answer. My fault for assuming that Infinity itself wouldn't make a mistake, but the guy that did the refoam told me it's a common problem with Betas, as he'd done about a dozen pairs, and 3 had at least one woofer miswired. As evidence against the thesis, my second pair were perfect.

Could just be a small sample problem... or not, but since they're already opened up, why not be sure?

I didn't know that the Betas used Watkins DVC drivers, but than again I would never imagined that a metal frame would sag over time to have to worry about orientation of the basket.

I dont think the IMG woofers were Watkins. I was under the impression all of Watkins designs used by Infinity are DVC and the IMG woofers are not DVC. And I don't think I've ever heard of Watkins having any servo designs. What Doug was measuring that he thought was a second voice coil were the terminals for the servo cable. They're positioned on the side of the magnet opposite where the voice coil input terminals are so it looks a lot like a DVC design.

And it's not the frame that sags, Ken. It's the spider.
