How about Robin Trower

[Moman5150]

Good one Mystic

[55Redneck]

Chet Atkins, Doc Watson, and Tommy Emanuell for starters. Delving into more electric stuff, Clapton has to be on a list like this, SRV, Knopfler, Beck, Paige, Blackmore, and Kenny Wayne Shephard ain't to bad either. Her's an odd one for ya all, Nancy Wilson is a pretty good picker too.

[kaplang]

Ted Greene
He was a chord chemist.

[Quadman2]

So many guitar greats...and so little time to enjoy them all!

I'll vote for today's birthday boy, Pete Townshend. Not really virtuoso compared to most here, but his style and delivery always made up for that.

[AudioGeek]

Warren Haynes. Billy Gibbons. Derek Trucks. Then there are several very good blues players and metal players, for example.

[IPADave]

Hot Tuna S/T
Jorma Kaukonen

[Bill Ashton]

And Tony Rice, how could I forget him?

[MJB1959]

Got to have some Steve Morse, Bireli Lagrene. McLaughlin, Guthrie Govan, Sharon Isben, Scott Henderson, Allan Holdsworth, Tommy Emmanuel. Christopher Parkening.

[jbrainey]

Mr Buckingham has some memorable riffs and deserves a place on this list.

in 1975 Clapton and Santana were touring together. i saw them here in Minneapolis. first Santana and his band played then Clapton and his at the end both bands came out together and played a 24 minute jam Clapton and Santana were toe to toe two of the best together it was AWESOME!!!
this is on the Eric Clapton Crossroads 2 - CD set as well.

I caught tthat tour in Portland Or. at the old Colosseum. One of the best shows of the many I saw there.. Clapton had a bottle of booze sitting on a stool next to him that he hit off several times.

[fredgarvin]

To add some not mentioned, who were very influential and some of the best I've seen, George Benson, Gabor Szabo and Danny Gatton. George is still going!

[Rockon1]

[Bill Ferris]

Peter Green, if not already mentioned.

[KeninDC]

Freddie was the King.

[KeninDC]

A lesson in tone from two unsurpassed masters of the guitar. First Keith Richards and then Mick Taylor.
