When her debut album came out, my best friend at the time, and I kind of made fun of her unintelligible singing and, actually, sang "Chuck E's In Love" in made up syllables and laughed. However, we both adored her and her album.

Maybe, but she wasn't smart enough to hire Nils Lofgren to be her lead guitarist. Bruce is quite the "Boss".

Ted Gioia begins his essay about Rickie Lee Jones with an interesting anecdote. I know musicians who record and tour with her and ones who have suffered the occasional blow-up. I was never much of a fan, but I do dig her Steely Dan cover with the great Richard Davis on bass: "Show Biz Kids."

AFAIK, Chuck E. is Charles Edward Weiss; "PLP"= Play a Little Pool"? Later in the song she sings, "Is he here? I look in the poolhall"

"PLP" is "Public Leaning Post" and is slang for friends leaning on each other.

I picked up her first album a few years back and was quite shocked how good it was. On the Springsteen reference, I agree Bruce is way overrated. Plus he is a tool !!

I noticed that the better my system got, the easier it was to understand what she was singing.

I have had the same experience and I have gotten where I don't care if I understand her or not. I think we may be exaggerating a bit, anyway. She's usually easier to understand vs. "Chuck E's in Love".

I recall years ago Michael Fremer reviewed a piece of gear for The Absolute Sound and said it passed the Rickie Lee Jones mumble test, which I thought was pretty funny.
