Update on new EMIT/EMIM Diaphragms

I must confess I've been hoarding them a bit, for down the road use, as I consider my serious Infinitys nothing short of heirloom quality pieces, as does my musician/heir twenty year old son:yes:

at present I have two EMIT-K, and three EMIT-R, and I'm ever vigilant....:D

I'll confess to hoarding a few, too. At last count, I think I had 10 EMITs. :D I'll probably be in the market for a few spare diaphragms, too, when they are ready. I don't want my Infinities to die before I do, and I don't rule out the possibility of acquiring more Infinity Speakers (that perhaps will need repair) before then, either!

As long as we’re confessing, I’ll also admit that I’ve got 4 EMIT-K’s in the secret stash.

someone is on ebay right now wondering where all the emits are, meanwhile he has a pair of infinitys with actually damaged emits that he can't use...

turns out they're in storage in your drawers :-)

audiokarma is full of people who are very very good to become friends with if you want access to the secret emit stash LoL

(just teasing people here, I'd keep extras too if I could)

I have got a bunch of spare EMIMs and EMITs too. It is not as if I have stolen them, I paid pretty good money for each and every one. For that rainy day when one of my "line" units gives up the ghost. :smoke:

Uh, I DON'T have any extra EMIM's. I sent one bad and one good to Graz. Had 2 that needed replacing. So I'm lagging behind a bit. Emits are not a problem.

Hi everyone! TYMLTK, Graz wrote back to me today to let me know he received my package containing a brand new/working High Energy Emit & Emim from the later model IRS Omega/Sigma & Renaissance series, a copy of Infinity's Technical White Paper for the Renaissance 90 & attached notes. Graz told me he was very impressed on first inspection of these drivers & said -

"At a glance they are far superior to the earlier stuff..the ribbon construction is much better, likely to outlast the original EMIT/EMIMs by a large margin. I understand the production of these - the ribbon units would be expensive, and require semi-mass production to approach viability. Your enclosed letter was excellent - this allows me to complete the original work and assess if I will ever get that investment back before committing to a batch run of the later type."

Also fyi, Graz said he expects to look at the above production task around the end of January next year. What would be helpful is if owners of the above-mentioned speakers (including possibly IRS Epsilon owners) could send me a Brief pm letting me know what speakers you own & how many drivers (incl: type) you would be serious about sending to Graz if he can produce a 'Graz' replacement. Over the next couple of months I will compile responses into a spreadsheet & send them to Graz. Obviously there are fewer numbers of these later model Infinitys around, so please get the message out there (including any German Infinity nuts you know) to give this additional project the best possible chance of getting over the line!!!

Rgds,
Dave.

sorry for the thread jack(on topic though)

are there any emit-r replacements around?

Hi there! My last pair of Infinity's (Reference 60's) had the Emit R & when I last spoke to Harmon a few months ago they advised me they had sufficient stock of the Emit R's for a "good time to come". Not sure of price, but you can also find Emit-R's regularly for sale on Ebay. Although one caution; I would only buy a 2nd hand Emit if they post decent high res photos of the diaphragm & the drivers have been Ohm tested...Cheers :thmbsp:

Hello

I am looking for DEAD/JUNK even ripped/burned examples of the last series of EMIM drivers - the ones without the tape on. They have an id number 507955-1. I haven't enough of the actual diaphragm material here to get a match from, most frustrating.

PLEASE - anybody with absolute dead ones they no longer require - please contact me privately!

Hopeful - Graz

Yes, the analysis of the films is complete, and the results have been relayed to Graz. He has ordered films (which were the last item to sort out) and needs to build and test protoypes.

Stay tuned, progress is being made.

You would need to supply him with an example of one if it is different from the others. I know he has at least two different versions in his possession.

Any idea which ones he already has? Many of the EMIM's had the same p/n but different diaphragms internally designated by different revisions. I know that Rev's B, C, and E fit the Ref Standards 1, 2, and 4 and the Rev D was used in the IRS Beta's.

For all of you interested, I have had the fortunate opportunity to purchase ribbons from Graz.

I replaced the mid/tweeters on my Mini-Grands with his XLM-2's a few years ago. He makes a very high quality ribbon. His installation instructions are accurate and easy to follow. He quickly provided advice when I needed it.
My Mini-Grands sound terrific!!
He is passionate about his business and, thank goodness, he has brought life back to the Apogee line.
Graz is certainly one who could resurrect the EMIT and EMIM drivers.
By the way, if you ever have the opportunity to see and hear these glorious speakers with Graz's ribbons, Rich Murry of True Sound Works in northwest Nevada has been rebuilding Apogees for a few years. They are truely a work of art.

I hope he does this as I was working on getting a speaker manufactor here in Florida to contract out for me making replacement diaphrams for both EMIT, EMIM, and the dome Mid-range in the quantum series.

I talked to Harmon Kardon the a few weeks ago with part numbers and at that time they told me they had diaphrams for the QLS in stock quanity 31. Last week they told me they didn't have any, don't know about them sounds like they outsource to Taiwan. But they did have some brand new Dome mids for the QLS in stock and they sent them to me, they were not cheap and they didn't just have diaphrams. Its kind of a hit or miss thing with them it seems like it depends on who you get on the phone. I was happy to get the mid-range dome speakers though I called last week to buy every EMIT diaphram they had but they said they were now out, so someone within a two week period purchased all 31 diaphrams to fit the QLS series.
