Plenty of non blu ray DVD for $10 or so at thrifts. Keep an eye out for a goodie. No need to pay anywhere near $100 for anything less than stupendous. CD is a dying medium and players are cheap. I found a sweet pPioneer DV606D for $5 (no remote). Used only for music and it sounds plenty fine in office.

Too bad you're not a subscriber. There's a nice Musical Fidelity single disc player for sale there for not much more than what you're looking to spend.

If he's looking at a $100 unit, I'm assuming he's above a basic Technics changer or a cheap dvd player. Yeah, The Musical Fidelity player would be a great buy. I've also found a Denon dcd-1500 at a local thrift, a TOTL Kenwood, and I've passed on a couple pretty sweet SACD players before. It might take you a hundred trips to find a high-end unit, but they are in the thrifts for around twenty bucks. Otherwise, CL has some nice units. I sold a sweet Nakamichi and a Luxman on CL a while back to clear out some space. I think I was only asking $60 each.

Keep an eye out for early Philips/Magnavox single tray players made in Belgium.
The Magnavox CDB-500 made in Mexico is also a good sounding unit.
No need to spend a lot on a cd player. If you know what to look for and look often you will find some good stuff. I have found NAD,Arcam, Philips and Oppo players for less than $15 each. Oh and I found a Sony ES multi-tray player for $10 once.

Icenine's suggestions are good. Do some internet seaching on DACs (Digital Audio Converters) Some of the early DAC are coveted, and are considered by some to be superior to later and today's offerings. Many of Phillips and Magnavox units suggested had the TDA 1541 and TDA1541a DAC which are considered by many to be one of the best from the past. Below are a couple of links on the subject. $100 should easily get you what you want, probably significantly less if you take some time and scrounge the Thrifts.

I ended up picking up a made in Japan Sony CDP-550 at a thrift store. Good condition and sounds good but wow I forgot how much CD's can skip. Is it normal for an older player like this to be skipping easily?

Yes. Could be a dirty laser. But many early players were not that great. This is a late 80's unit? About 88'?
Guys say many single disc players out there, but very few (Like the CDP 550) are worth the effort. Good single disc players are very hard to find. Quality ones anyway.
I have had the Denon mentioned earlier in the thread, a 1990ish Rotel, and a Marantz CdC 5001 which I still have.
my experiences with older sony's and the technics models (and a good general thing to do to ANY brand),..
heres what may be up, the laser is in a housing, the housing slides on guide rails, there is a twisty bit driven by a motor that makes it slide around...
now what you're going to need is a dremmel type device with a brush head because it can be a real bitch to clean these things otherwise(the grease has to come OUT of those crevices), get all that mess out of there and apply a very thin layer of new and then reassemble all of that. and you do have to disassemble for this because the crud is inside the housing part too where the rails and twisty bit pass-through
if your cdp is giving you ANY sort of issue in the same general spot of a known good cd, or consistant skipping through-out and at random even after cleaning the laser, this might be why.
as someone else said it could be a dying laser but i dont actually encounter that very much.

They were improving greatly at that point. Kenwood was one that was making crap by that point. I had one of their crappy players.
I have a Sony C222ES Changer that I purchased new boxed from a thrift for $45 in 2009 that works great.
Pioneer Elite made some great DVD players in the early 00's that are great all around. I picked up a Pioneer Elite DV-46AV with remote for $6 and it blows me away how good that little player is.
