Hello folks, I have just acquired some Vandersteen parts from AK member theoman, and was thinking some of you might be interested to see my project! I haven't started yet, but I will start working very soon. In the mean time, take a look at theoman's old thread!

I'm new to cabinet building, so I may need some help along the way, but I'm confident that with time and effort that I'll provide these drivers with the home they deserve.

Vandersteen reasonably declined my request for the cabinet design, although with the help of tau_ceti, I've found bits and pieces indicating how they're made.

So far, I've come across these neat pics.

I own Vandersteen 2ce signature ii’s and one thing I know about Vandersteen speakers after years of ownership and talking with Richard personally is that these speakers are built and tuned specifically the way they are for a reason and that’s for optimal performance based on the design. I personally would have the 5a’s built exactly the way they were designed to be however that will be near impossible because Vandersteen will not disclose the schematics of there cabinet designs .

So with that said you have two choices , send the 5a’s in and spend the $6k+ to have them rebuilt and refurbished to spec or build your own and try to get as close as possible. I like the idea of just making the base a solid stand for the top part and using two subwoofers along side each speaker . Either way you go it will be interesting to watch your journey in making these incredible speakers come back to life .

I think I'll end up trying to replicate Vandie's design, although separating them would likely result in something better. If what I have in mind doesn't work out, I may end up doing that, but I'm a sucker for aesthetics.

This is a super cool project, but you might get a better response rate by having this thread moved out of the Infinity sub forum and into the Speakers sub forum.

I'm thinking of making them so incredibly heavy, that it's near impossible to move. I'm going to make them possible to move by making the top portion removable, and possibly make some floorstanding cabs if I want to listen to them separated.

I not that compacted! most of the base is just structural. just define the outer sides and the location of the woofer and seal. as for the ribs just divide equally.

Sorry I’ve been awol. Let me know if I can help. One thing I can’t do is put these speakers in their sides. 180 pounds!
