What was it? I had been a Beatles fan since day one but,the first time I heard "Paperback Writer", it completely blew me away. The opening harmonies and guitar riff was something that had never been done.That song is still magical today for me.

The song that I believe woke me up to rock'n'roll was December, 1963 (Oh What a Night) by Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.

No, really, I don't really recall any one particular song, but once I heard Rush at age 13/14ish I was blown away. Anything I had heard prior (or have heard subsequently) was immediately regulated to second tier, as good as it was and as much as I did/do enjoy it. And that remains the case to this day. :yes:
 
When I was probably six or seven years old, I fell in love with a record, "La Paloma" by The Billy Vaughn Orchestra, that my grandparents owned. Everytime I would visit them I played that record over and over. Every cut from the first to the last. I loved that record.
About two years ago I found a copy of that record in a used record store. I bought it and excitedly put it on when I got home. It was horrible. I couldn't believe that I was so enthralled by this record so many years ago. What was I thinking?
 
My earliest clear musical memories included some things that I have to laugh at now... but hey, I was just a toddler back then! They would include songs like: Baby Elephant Walk; Ghost Riders in the Sky; Green Onions; Take Five and The Toreador's Song and Hanabera (from Bizet's Carmen). Then came the early Beatles. Move ahead a bit, and I was into artists like Peter, Paul and Mary; Bob Dylan; The Bee Gees (their earliest stuff was good); The Doors; Steppenwolf, Iron Butterfly; etc... The list quickly becomes too long to bother trying to list, including artists across multiple genres, including jazz, (what is now called) world music, and even a brief flirtation with Country & Western.

I've been "moved" to varying degrees by songs of all sorts. As to which song first "moved" me, uhm.... impossible to say, after all these years! :dunno: It was probably some lullaby sung by my Mother, I would guess ...then maybe something sung on Kaptain Kangaroo or Romper Room?! :D
 
Going to California - Led Zeppelin.. Man I was 13 and my girlfriend was 15 and a half, it was her favorite song,, and friends.. she moved me!!!

I played that cd and Queens Greatests Hits cd a LOT when I was a kid.

Not my main choice now, but still music I like.

I'm going to get hit real hard on this choice, but Mandy- Barry Manilow. It was at the time when I started paying attention to music in a non-background sort of way. It was my mother's album and got lots of play by her so I couldn't help but be around it a lot. Even now, 35+ years later, it still moves me. I was developing my interest in astronomy as well at the time and everytime I get my telescope out for a viewing, the association is there.
 
I was about 5 and the song was "Big Bad John" performed by Jimmy Dean and composed by Dean and Roy Acuff.

Story of a miner involved in a disaster that saves the lives of 20 other miners but dies in the mine.

"At the bottom of this mine lies one hell of a man---Big John"
 
Ordinary man by Triumph and Jimi's Redhouse. Music was never the same for me since.

For me it was just one song...Patsy Cline's "The Wayward Wind" playing right now as I type. I bought a compilation CD a few years ago for this tune and as a bonus I got my 2nd on the list, Jo Stafford singing "Shrimp Boats".
Even though there's been lots of different musical styles in my life over the (many) years since then, I have to admit that I still have a deep feeling for these and some others of that ilk, but since these ones were pretty early in my life the nostalgia is fairly strong. They are just so evocative of an earlier period.
 
"I Feel Fine" Beatles. The opening note still sends 'shivers down my backbone'! And George Martin and I share the same birthday although 31 years apart.

My brother's the same way with Kiss. Well, actually I don't think he plays anything else... ever. I've been trying to expand his musical palate now since we were teenagers... largely to no avail. He did show up at my place last night with an Aerosmith boxed set of some kind so maybe he's actually started to branch out finally. He's 43.

I was 7 when "Please Please Me" by the Beatles came out. I had never heard a sound like that and it just blew me away. Been a Beatles fan ever since.:music:
