I've been away for a month, maybe more. I figured I would take a break from this site and all the Ads. But I have people asking me for help via PMs, and I look for some help myself sometimes.

So when I logged on today, I was greeting with this new fresh hell - view ad to continue.

Latest AK BS.jpg

Like the name would suggest, it wouldn't let me scroll on and read the rest of this thread until I clicked on the ad. Or, if I closed down Chrome and went back in.

No, I don't have an ad blocker installed. This is a work PC, and I.T. don't want or like things installed without their permission. And if I asked them, they would want to know why.

I haven't had the ad problem, but I've always used a filtered DNS server (Ultimate Hosts) that seems to help. The sites that ask me to turn off my ad blocker make me chuckle because they assume I even have the power to do that. Like there's a switch or something. Ditto with a work computer. The photography site DPReview was good but after a recent transfer to a different web program the ads have made the site horrible. They should be careful not to put themselves out of business.

Yup, obnoxious adds continue, at one point they were coming at you from the middle, top, and bottom of the screen. I don't mind adds on the bottom of the screen, the "click ad to continue" is the most irritating. Do these ads really bring in business? Personally, I'd never purchase anything from an ad that pisses me off.

I do not understand it entirely, but if (on my cell phone) I log in immediately following the query if I am human, I continue with no ads.

If I hesitate for some reason, the ads do start, but once signed in I am fine.

My desktop has an ad blocker, but have not renewed or subscribed in ages, and I remain ad free here.

:dunno:

Says subscriber under your name...that is why you get no ads....

Like subscribing to YouTube no ads
Lower tier music gets ads
Free = ads
Someone has to pay the bills here as I don’t believe this is a charity
I am used to it with other forums and this is the only one I subscribe to and I just ignore the ads as best as I can on the other forums really not a big deal for me

Back to the OP's original post

Subscriber or not the "View Ad To Continue" needs to go. Its border line malware. Certainly crapware.

I won't go totally into why "Subscribers" should care but leave it at it does affect subscribers.

PS: So we all become subscribers yay. But do you folks really think the ads would be gone in that Utopia. Just look at the Internet itself. Being a member used to block ads , give people ad free streaming etc. Not so much now huh ??

Ads are more... uh... "creative" in how they work these days. There's big bucks in it. And therefore, a lot of smart people are involved.

Survival of the most clever.

One last thing about advertising

"Amazon Prime Streaming"

Used to offer an AD free experience included with your prime membership.

Now you can't even fast forward through them , if you click during the ad a lot of times it will either send the item to your cart or send you "Spam" to your phone or email.

You can opt out of this crap but its 2.99 or whatever a month.

And oh yah they continue to jack up the cost of PRIME as well.

So what am I saying. Its not gonna ever go like this here because our admins/owners like you guys.

But woe be us if they ever get fed up with all of this and sell this off to something.

Anyone remember what happened to AudioGon ??

Frannie

PS: Support this site. It is a nice place.
