I listen to my vintage system on Sat, and Sun. mornings while drinking a pot of coffee and surfing the internet. Usually the source is Sirus radio through the satellite TV system. I have a portable CD player and Sony TC377 r2r connected to that system as well that gets use occasionally.
If my main system in the living room is on, ( a mixture of vintage and modern gear ) my butt is planted in the sweet spot critically listening and usually my wife sits and listens with me while she surfs the internet on her laptop.
When friends are over, sometimes they will listen somewhat critically but sometimes it becomes background music and I may flip off the tubes and power up the HT receiver for that. It's all good though!

Yeah, all my gear is vintage, in the living room. I play it loud, so I can listen anywhere no matter what I'm doing. If I want to listen to something for the first time, that's a critical listen. Then i sit in the "sweet spot", Mid volumn maybe more and "listen"

If I'm just jammin, I crank the hell outta of her and do what I do...rock out!!

If friends are over, I play it as loud as they want or the party calls for.

If I fiddlin around doing chores or working around the house, I can crank it loud enough so I can hear it no matter where I may be. There isn't any neighbors close enough to worry about pissin off. There are some advantages to livin in the country.

Vintage system, lights out, standing, holding beverage. (I listen to live recordings)

But... there is almost always music in the background of my life, driving, cooking, gardening, hobby time, etc. It plays in my head if I don't have a system going!

I actually mostly listen and do nothing else in that time. I would say 80%. The rest is background music, mostly when friends are over. I have friends that bring music to listen to, then its 50/50. Listening and talking.

I voted ass planted in sweet spot as that's how i do most my music listening, but as others mentioned this is a tough vote as i have three dedicated two channel rigs in my basement mancave i can and do listen to.

My two main two channel rigs are on one end of the room, one being setup specifically for the sweet spot listening, the other a more room filling system for when the guys are over to shoot some pool, play some cards etc.

The third system at the other end is my test and tweak setup, where i am continually swapping in and out components and speakers from my collection or testing out new acquisitions.

But overall most of my time spent actually listening to music is in my main setup planted in the sweet spot.

Didn't vote in the poll because I'm not a vintage guy. For CDs I most certainly do the ass-dent thing. I'll do the ass-dent thing sometimes when I'm listening to FM however I don't think something like NPR is exactly sweet-spot dependent.

I also clock a lot of headphone time which I would consider critical listening but is not covered by OP's poll.

I'm usually surfing political sites, shopping for vinyl or audio components I really don't need on Ebay and buying same, browsing AK and drooling over all your guys' systems and really enjoying pictures of your gear, or blowing stuff up in Battlefield 3 :uzi:

My main system is for serious listening time only. I have another smaller system that is used for background music or when I just feel like having music on while I'm doing something else, etc..............

Regards to all...........Terry:thmbsp::music:

The poll is somewhat flawed in my opinion for reasons already mentioned, since my system is neither fully vintage or modern. Source media includes lossless computer-based files, CDs, and vinyl. The amps and preamp are decidedly vintage, and the speakers somewhere in between.

When I'm listening to computer-based files and CDs, I'm more than likely in the sweet spot or nearby, but engaged in some other activity, like sitting at the computer (on AK or 914World ), poring over a schematic, soldering something, maintaining my bike, etc.. If I'm listening to vinyl, I'm more than likely glued to the sweet spot with my attention focused keenly upon the music. There is something about the combination of SQ and finite lifespan that commands my attention more than a digital file that can (in theory) be played again and again indefinitely with no degradation. This is not to say that I don't listen to digital files in "attention" mode, just not as often. I listen to digital media more often and save the vinyl for times when I can focus primarily upon what is playing. YMMV.

Flawed poll or not, this has been an interesting read.

Flaws aside, this was a fun poll. There are times when I may be doing any of the options but edging out the other two options is planted and listening at least with the main system.
