I had bought a brand new Project One in 1980. It was/is a beast 150 per channel. I sold it long time ago with my pair of Pioneer HPM 100 speakers, I've regretted it to this day.
Question to you..I have a chance to buy another one on eBay for $1500 / A Pioneer 1250 at 165 watts channel for a price of $2900, the Pioneer reciever has been rebuilt. / A Marantz 2385 Receiver. 185 watts per channel... fully rebuilt and restored All the mains, transistors, and caps have been replaced. All new bulbs put in as well. Controls have been cleaned and unit detailed. Service was performed by a technician with over 23 years experience in vintage electronics.
What would you buy. ?

jeez , It is so tough buying sight unseen . Anybody can say anything over the internet . But , if it is your passion , then go for it .

30 day money back guarantee, us ebay and PayPal both have how should I put it, insurance if it's not as subscribed. Lots of safety features. I would not by it if cash only or like on Craigslist sight unseen. Plus there are at least 12 pics of each item I can look at and zoom in on.

I really like my Marantz 2270, though sometimes I wish that it had a bit more power. Still, as much as I like it, I'm not sure that I would buy it in this market for what it goes for. I have to wonder if there maybe aren't better choices (with separates) that I could get in something newer for the same money. If you have the budget for one of these expensive old receivers and are in love with the look/vibe of it then you have your answer... get it. if it were me, I'd be biassed towards one that has been recently serviced though.... or just wait until a serviced, guaranteed version of the model that you really want becomes available.
 
Do you know about the Pioneer/Marantz/Sansui tax? Are you willing to pay it to own those brands? Research it if you care.

Buy separates appropriate for the speakers you would use.

I have to say Im also in the camp of thought when one is willing to spend
to spend $1k+ for some form of home amp Id be going with separates and
newer stuff in most cases vs some older monster receiver.

But nostalgia / looks is a HUGE driving force with the vintage receiver scene.

If I had to pick from your selection Id choose the 1250. I like its build and look
the most. But I think 3k is way high personally. And OMG does that $ buy all
sorts of better performing gear.

One other reason I personally wouldnt want or spend big $ on a monster receiver
is eventually (probably sooner than later) radio in the USA will go digital. Making
the use of the tuner in a receiver negate.

I would encourage you to look into some used Parasound separates or what ever
look / maker you like. Or wait for a better deal on a properly serviced 1250. Maybe
find a minty stock 1250 for around $1k-1.5 and pay someone around $500-800 for
a good once over.

Look at the many Luxman and Yamaha models that have the same feature set, build quality, and aesthetic as vintage pieces. Both of those are integrated amplifiers with sexy power meters and REMOTE CONTROLS (!!!!!) and both of them will absolutely trump even a restored unit on dependability and, most importantly, sound. I am a proud owner of a Luxman, but I also adore the Yamaha.
