Vintage Rega Planar 2

Hi there - new to this wonderful world of vinyl and learning a lot as I go. This just popped up on my local buy n sell and I’m wondering if it’s worth pursuing for $300. I can’t tell what’s original or what’s been replaced through the years, things to look out for, common issues, etc. Hoping someone here can drop some knowledge!

I’ve been looking to buy the Pro-Ject Debut III Phono SB that’s currently for sale online for $249. After reading myself into a frenzy it seems like this is about as good a place to start for the price as anything else. Just curious if it’s worth pivoting and checking out this relic.

Thanks!

Hi,looks pretty much original to me,I would pick the Rega over the Pro-Ject,way better table.
Thanks for your quick response. Anything you would recommend to keep in mind when looking over older turntables? I’ll read other threads here about this TT to learn more but curious what stands out to you that makes the older Rega a much better table than a new Project? One of my worries with “buying vintage” is potentially needing to fix things off the bat or more often and it becoming a cash sink. I guess it’s sort of a dice roll either way. Thanks again for any time and insight you’re willing to share :)

That tonearm has issues with the anti skate band. I have heard stories that replacements are now available. But I would confirm that. That is a very very very old table. Make sure you are willing to invest a bit of time into it, or confirm it's been restored.

Oh and I would not buy a Project either, too many known issues. I would make the choice of a better used table before the Project option.
