Volume pot cleaning guide for AU-717

This week I was wrapping up an AU-717 overhaul and noticed the volume pot was noisy around the 9 o'clock region. My first attempt and fixing it was to turn off the amp and work the pot back and forth through the full range a couple dozen times. This didn't help so I knew I needed to do something a little more invasive. After a bit of research I came up with a plan to clean the pots with Deoxit F5 (not D5), and I decided to take photos so I could make a guide in case it was successful.

The AU-717 has four stacked pots. Two are 150k pots (R and L), and two are 5k (R and L). The 150k pots attenuate the signal coming in to the tone board, and the 5k pots attenuate the signal as it leaves the preamp. There are some descriptions here on Audiokarma explaining the rationale, and I won't cover it here.

If you want to get an idea of what the pots look like, you can loosen the two long screws until the nuts come off the back. Then you can pull off the rear cap and expose the rearmost pot. The white disc has contacts near the center that touch an un-attenuated track on the PCB. These are connected to contacts near the edge of the disc that sweep along the attenuated outer track on the PCB. Along one edge of the PCB you will see some traces with black rectangles overlapping adjacent pairs. The black rectangles are (IIRC) resistors that tweak the attenuation curve in the lower half of the volume range (again, this is explained better elsewhere).

To completely disassemble the pot you would need to remove (probably destructively) the push nut at the end of the shaft that holds the assembly together and applies pressure to the contacts. I would only use this as a last resort or if trying to rebuild from a donor pot. But it shouldn't be necessary for cleaning and protecting the contacts and attenuated traces inside.

Some threads have recommended pulling the chambers apart a few mm, one chamber at a time, to allow cleaner to be introduced. I tried this approach initially, but found it was tricky to get it to open wide enough for a Deoxit F5 spray tube to fit. Also, when pulling the chambers apart like this, you are flexing the spring contacts significantly.

I decided to take a slightly more invasive approach and drill access holes in the plastic sections for spraying and draining contact cleaner. I used a piece of tape as a guide for the hole locations. I used a pin vise with a drill bit slightly larger than the Deoxit F5 spray tube. I held the volume pot while I drilled so that the holes I was making pointed downward, and the debris from drilling would fall away from the hole instead of ending up inside. To make sure I didn't drill too far and touch internal parts, I set up the pin vise so the drill bit only protruded a few mm (slightly thicker than the plastic wall of the pot). Every 10 revolutions or so I pulled out the bit and tapped it on a hard surface to get rid of excess debris.

Once all four holes were drilled, I sprayed Deoxit 5 into each of the chambers and then oriented it with the shaft pointing down so the fluid would spread out on the PCB. I rotated the shaft back and forth a couple dozen times. Next, I laid the pot on its side, holes down, on top of a piece of folded paper towel. The paper towel draws out a lot of the excess contact cleaner through the holes and the between chamber sections. After this I cleaned up the outside of the pot and reinstalled it (and F-2720) back in the front panel.

When I had the amp reassembled and started to test I had a moment (or a few hours) of panic because the pot had stopped working. The amp would only play at about 50% volume regardless of the volume setting. I was convinced I had somehow damaged the pot, so I started de-soldering the flying leads from the PCB so I could measure resistances of each pot at various settings. The third wire I de-soldered was number 21 (black), and it just fell out of the amp even though it should have been connected to a solder tab on the volume pot. What had happened was while I was maneuvering the volume pot earlier (for drilling, spraying, draining, etc.) the black wire had broken off. It was brittle from solder that had flowed into the insulated part when it was originally assembled. The black wire (21) provides the signal ground for the two pots (R and L) that attenuate the signal as it leaves the preamp. Without this wire connected, the signal wasn't being pulled down and the pot was unable to decrease volume to nothing. The lesson I learned (although this hasn't happened on previous AU-717 projects) was to inspect all the flying leads whenever F-2720 and the volume pot are removed for any reason (recap, pot cleaning, etc.). It's much easier to fix in the moment than to have everything back together and worry that you've killed the preamp board and/or pot in some mysterious way.

Nice photos, thank you for sharing. The 717 volume control definitely seems to be a troublemaker. If anyone is here trying to fix their 717 volume control to no avail user @TupolevFan may have a new modern replacement available ;)

I can't tell from the can but make sure you are using Dexoit F5. The D5 variant is not for carbon pots and may damage it. The Fader line is safe/suggested for carbon.

When my friend's AU-717 volume pot was sounding scratchy, losing contact, I just sprayed FaderLube into the openings where the pot leads are soldered to the wires, one at a time, then worked the pot back and forth to clean the contacts inside. Worked great and I didn't have to remove the pot from the amp, nor disassemble it. The amp is still working fine.

I did this technique today and i have to say this is essential, totally worth it, but i didnt drill with the holes pointed to the floor to the debris don't ge in, i think this would be nice to do, when drilling when its very near to drill completely the small tool for drilling gets hard my tip is to dont pull out keep forcing till the hole open because the debris wont fall in when you pull out, after i finished doing the 4 holes i sprayed deoxit d5 and then after i flooded the holes with isopropill alchool, i turned the unit 90o with the holes pointed to the sky , ]] , and flooded with isopropil achool and turned very fast the potentiometer up and down the isopropril helped the deoxit to come in all places of the pot now the volume pot is easy as cutting butter with a hot knife, other story and i think the sound is soo much better too, i think cleaning this pot is mandatory if you have an au 717.

If we could be sure that everyone who decided to drill holes in their unobtanium volume control would do it with as much care as described by @crv00, I might even come round to thinking that it is an appropriate way to get 'F5' into those pots. :angel:

Several people have commented in other threads (and maybe here) that you can shoot F5 up through the holes where the solder tabs come out. But with every AU-717 I have come across, only one or two of the compartments (rows of contacts) actually have openings and the others are blocked.

I see there's translation on the video but the sansui au 717 part seems to be very small and not well detailed can you explain in steps how to open the pot? i will give the instructions to my tech.

I cleaned my 717's potentiometer last year. Taking it apart is the best way as far as I am concerned. As said before you will need a 2.5mm locking washer for reassembly as the original has to be cut off. I was quite afraid of making a mess of it but all went well, the hardest part was getting the courage to open it up.
I put quite a few pics on my 717 thread, not as a guide but I took them incase I forgot what goes where!

Does this washer is the correct one? i bought on aliexpress it says starlock washer 2.5M , I will leave to my tech to open i will print the images you listed to guide him @Bumpalump:

Several people have commented in other threads (and maybe here) that you can shoot F5 up through the holes where the solder tabs come out. But with every AU-717 I have come across, only one or two of the compartments (rows of contacts) actually have openings and the others are blocked.

The volume pot in my previous post (#4) I worked on had openings on each section. The owner of this amp hasn't had a problem with it since I cleaned it.

I pulled the pot out of a Pioneer and separated the sections with thinner cardboard and sprayed F5 into each section then worked it back and forth after removing the cardboard. Then I put the cardboard back and used a blow dryer to dry it out some before reassembly. Holes don't need to be drilled if the pot's bolts are loosened to the point where the nuts don't fall off and cardboard can be inserted. Each section can be cleaned without completely disassembling the pot.

As I said before, these units haven't had a problem with the volume control since I worked on them.

But pulling the sections apart puts stress on the spring contacts, and could decrease the contact pressure they make with the tracks when the stress is released. The wipers are what cause the sections to want to pull back together.

And since I’ve read other posts where people talked about the springs not pushing hard enough against the tracks (and needing bending), I decided against it.

Having holes in the pot makes it simple to apply Faderlube in the future without taking anything apart, so it’s a worthwhile approach IMO.

Anyway, it’s always good to have so many options!

Wondering how you keep debris that collects in the drill bit flutes from falling in to the pot. I know the design is to pull it back away from the item being drilled, but I don't believe all of the smaller shaving come out. Some must fall in. That is what keeps me from drilling. The unknown.

When I pull the sections apart it's only far enough to place a thin piece of cardboard between them. More than enough room to apply cleaner and very little stress on the springs.

Both approaches seem to work very well.
