Wondering how you keep debris that collects in the drill bit flutes from falling in to the pot.

If debris is a concern maybe melting a hole with a hot needle or similar could be an option.

I use a pin vise with tiny bits. I pull the bit out every few twists to get the debris off the bit. Most importantly, I hold the pot such that the drill is pointing upward, and loose debris falls out. You can tell when you're getting close with the hole, and you can set the bit in a pin vise so that only a few mm is sticking out which prevents it from popping in when the hole is complete.

The melting holes idea mentioned above is a good one as well.

I realize this is an old thread, but I just wanted to give it a bump to say it helped me quite a bit.

I rebuilt a 717 several years ago, and over those years I've had to pull the pot out, squirt Deoxit in where the wires are, and reassemble. Each time it would usually fix the problem, but sometimes I had to repeat it a couple of times. In each case, the cure only lasted for a while before I had to go though the process yet again.

I found this thread because I was Googling for a pot replacement, and saw the "drill" fix. I tried it yesterday, and it worked very, very well. I don't know if this fix will be more permanent, but as I drilled the hole in the top of the sections, now all I need do is pull the top cover and drip more Deoxit in the holes. No more partial disassembly hassle for a iffy fix.
