VPI Turntable Owners Thread

Well, I got a solid deal on a second hand Traveler, which turns out is going to be a brand new traveler (for the same price) thanks to an error on the part of the seller. Looking forward to getting it, which if things go well with UPS, may be tomorrow. I'll post my thoughts on it if anyone gives a crap. :-)

Well, I give a crap....what's it like?

2nd on giving a crap...I would like to hear your thoughts on the Traveler as well!

For once, crapping on a thread is a good thing.:scratch2:

Fourth crap - would like your comments on the Traveler.

I am now the proud owner of a VPI HW-19 mk IV. I'm super happy with how it sounds. One difference I quickly noted was how deep and refined the bass sounds. I'm assuming it's because of the million pound platter haha.

Rolling craps! Got a five! Tell us about the Traveler.

Ok! Thoughts on the Traveler after a couple weeks with it...

Pros: It sounds good, very very similar to my (heavily modded) Planar 2 actually. It has some audible motor hum but only when turned up beyond normal listening levels. It may be ever so slightly weaker in the bass range but the compliance of my Sumiko Blackbird is a little low for this arm vs. the RB 250. Still, put on music, turn it up to a reasonable level, and I don't find myself listening to the table at all, which for me is how I know that things are working. Speed stability is good enough for me. I measured it right at the .01% claimed using Platterspeed and my 3150hz test record. It also runs just a tad (test tone measured ~3160hz) fast.

Cons: Plinth isn't level. It actually has a slight sag through the middle. Purely an aesthetic gripe but I find it odd nonetheless. Installing a cart and getting the skating set up was fussy at best. I was twisting and fiddling with the wire like crazy to get the arm to float over the record surface at all. It was either pulling inward or outward no matter what I tried for the longest time. And then getting the VTF set has been troublesome as well. The arm sometimes seems to stick and not carry any weight until I lift and re-set it in the groove or on the stylus gauge. In the previous case, it on occasion won't track the lead in and will skip. I think its possible that a bearing is damaged but I was extremely careful mounting my nude, ruby cantilevered Sumiko on this thing so if I damaged a bearing installing, they're simply much too fragile to be used in a gimballed arm with a fixed headshell. Also, the pulley on the motor shaft was mounted too low and just barely rubbing on the plinth when I first set it up. Just a bad QC error tbh.

At my age, I have no business criticizing anyone for a sagging plinth:D, but it sure sounds like your piece has a few quality control issues.

Thanks for the thoughts. Have you called vpi to ask about any of your issues? I think they should take care of any concerns you have.

I haven't. I've been kinda sitting on it for awhile to at least let it settle in and frankly, I'm happy with how it sounds so its not a huge deal. It also was supposed to be a used Traveler but the Agon seller (a dealer) had listed the ad in the late afternoon and then sold the table out of the store and forgot to remove it before I had a chance to buy the following morning. He honored the deal with a "new" traveler at the second hand price which I thought was quite nice. I'm considering taking a pic of the plinth and emailing him about it, though I'd feel a bit guilty complaining all things considered.

I can completely understand your point of view on that one. At least you're happy with the way it sounds. That's the important part.

Yea, that's a tough spot to be in. Sounds like the dealer's trying to do right. I'm very curious about these budget VPI tables. Does anyone know if they are manufactured in the same New Jersey plant with the high end tables? I have to wonder since a lot of manufacturers are outsourcing "budget minded" products.

Based upon VPI's Facebook pictures I have seen in the past, the Traveler is manufactured at its NJ plant with everything else.

Beautiful table! Wonderful example of a later generation 19 series. Such a pretty table, and that is a very nice Sumiko arm. Congratulations on a fine table.

It's actually an AudioQuest PT-6 arm (looks nearly identical to a Sumiko, I know). Quick question, how does this stack up against the VPI Traveler? There's a VPI seller near me who was trying to convince me the Traveler was better but I just don't see that happening with my 20 lb platter...

I haven't heard either but would assume your table is a cut above the Traveler.

I'm sure the differences aren't astounding but I also would expect the HW to be a better table then the traveler—especially if you start moving up the ladder arm wise.
