It's hard to say..that's just one review, and other reviews are glowing in praise of it. There are so many variables. The author there was searching for a DL-103 replacement, and I didn't care for the DL-103 at all (except on my Empire) so different carts for different tastes I guess. I find the Shelter to be a lot more honest of what's in the groove than the DL-103 (which was on my VPI for a short while) while not being as bland sounding as I found the Benz Glider to be. But I'm a soundstage junky and listen to a lot of music with reverb and big open rooms so the Shelter is playing into my wants there.
The Dynavector Karat is an awesome cart, though. It was in the running for this table, as I have loved that cartridge when I've heard it on other tables. I'd probably like it here, just for different reasons.
I may play with damping the arm, just to play around but its fast and dynamic as it is. Nothing is over-played, which I felt the DL-103 was doing. Almost sounding like how compressed music can sound more bass-heavy or dynamic but really isn't.
The Shelter is tonally rich and complex. Its going to have me digging for different albums than the OC-9 did. I wish I had another arm-wand for the VPI, as I could see going back and forth.
Good luck with the Karat, its a fantastic cartridge. I really don't know that it would be better or worse than the Shelter, just different.
