VW brings the Bus back.

Pete Townsend, a Bulli nut in his own right, has met with the president of VW to get a new bus in production. Don't hold your breath, as it will take a lot of units to make it doable. But if it happens, all Bulli lovers will owe a debt to Pete.

I'm goin' home, and when I wanna go home, I'm goin' mobile...

Over here we still refer to everything and anything vaguely mini-bus-shaped as a "Kombi", after the VW Kombis that were popular in the 60s.
Those things had 38kW engines - can you believe anyone being happy with 38kW? Now not even in the smallest hatchback!

Oh, yeah, when I was a kid, I wanted a Samba Bulli or a suicide-door Lincoln Big-time bad. My mom couldn't drive a stick, my dad said Lincolns had no resale value, & he couldn't afford one anyway...So he bought a 250 SE Mercedes...Yeah, right, Daddy, don't try to BS yr car-nut kid, even if he is just 9-10...

We recently rented a VW Routan minivan to bring the last of my father's effects from NC back up to New England. It was an extremely nice vehicle - comfortable, quiet, powerful and surprisingly economical on the 1000 mile trip. It had LED interior lighting, which made it look a little like a refrigerator inside when the doors were opened!

VW did kinda invent the genre, didn't they?
You do realize that a Routan is just a rebadged Chrysler Town & Country, right?

While I understand everyone’s complaints about the looks; a flat nose in a collision! :thumbsdn:

Rly? Cooool!
Cheap too I guess?
Can't find the Brazilian site.
A camper version costs £22,999 left hand drive, £23,999 right hand drive through http://www.danburymotorcaravans.com/ in the UK.

No, I didn't. Jeepers. Now I am all confused :-P

Don't be. There's a lot of platform sharing in world car market. It totally makes sense for VW. US Eurovan sales outside of the Golden and Sunshine states didn't support making the Multivan DOT compliant. It's all about the numbers. Guess what they call the Westies im Deutscheland these days?

I'm working on my 1958 westy with safari windows right now. I have had to many to count. At one point I thought I would stop buying them. Then I came to my senses.

It blows me away what the market price is for a clean, low-ish mileage last year pop-top. Talk about pent up demand! Next to ever selling my '62 356B, my worst automotive regret was not buying my friend's '66 Westie 20 years ago. It was immaculate as he got it from the original owner, his 100% anal-about-his-cars step-dad. I loved that bus, I can't even remember why I passed on it now. He sold to a kid in the neighborhood who wrapped it around a light pole in less than 2 months.

BTW shouldn't your handle be VDOmike?:D

VTO stands for Vintage Transporter Owners. We are a 67 and older bus club that just had our 21st anniversary. We put on a bus camp out every year in June. We get people from all over the world.

I should have kept many cars :sigh: At one time i had a 54 356.
