walsh tweeter design/rebuild

The confusing part for me is with the tech spec schematic for the AXTs isn't accurate. It shows/mentions an emit tweeter but these speaks are clearly 3 ways. I dunno why that is unless they didn't have the permission to use the Walsh as a full on tweet from OHM?? Anyway, I think you are correct about how the schematic is drawn up. I do see that a lot in XOs. Certain drivers out of phase with others. I think they did a lot of 'by ear' design back in the seventies. Usually it is the tweeter that needs to be out of phase, unless the driver VCs are time aligned. Then it is 'ok' to correct the tweeter phase... I think I will use some PTC resistors, similar to the ones from lautsprechershop.de, to protect my tweeter.
Hello. A PTC will change the resistance with the temperature, modifying the circuit. (And probably the audio) in an unpredictable way. They are also very slow devices, I'm not sure if they will open the circuit before a tweeter blows. I' d use a fuse to protect a tweeter (even if my test speakers at my bench are protected by polyswitches, auto resettable fuses similar or the same to those PTC you refer, but I use them to test all kind of unknown gear). If you won't play the speakers very loud, the PTC will stay cold I guess. But it's a guess.
 
Thanks, I will be doing a rebuild similar to rayiver. So I think I can start out w/o any protection. I don't think I will be running my speakers that loud..

I fix blown tweeters all the time, and most of them were blown by "accidents", not usually by playing loud music: some feedback from a mic, somebody connecting a power amp that was set to Max volume, a fail in a device sending a high freq oscillation, and diferentes "audio accidents". If it's an expensive tweeter, I'd protect it in some way.

I don't own any walsh tweeter, but I think 0.75A should be safe for a tweeter. If you blow a 0.75A often, probably going up to 1A could work. In previous posts it's mentioned that the VC wire is very thin. I've used 0.5 and 0.75A fuses in my Emit tweeters, but I never play them too loud.
 
I think 1.5A is too large (IMHO). Please check the datasheets, some devices are rated for the current they can hold, and the trip current is twice that. Always check the "trip current".
 
Very cool! How do they sound? Which tweeter pair did you sacrifice for these? Monster energy drink can for the cone material? Lol!!!

They actually sound very well. Do exactly what I wanted. LOL, yes, I needed a very large can, the 24 oz fit the bill, and well, of the choices, the Monster looked the best to me. I did try painting one set, but was not happy with how they sounded. My "final" version, after playing around a lot with the one pictured and getting the process down, were some Mid/tweeters 1.5" domes from some EV Interface speakers, after I replaced the ferro-fluid in them.
 
Of course your going to say they sound very well, you have a lot of time in them.
But do you have time with the real walsh tweeters?

I have a full working set and 2 sets of rebuilt. And the cone materials, I have made many versions and staying close to original sounds the best.
I can't imagine a monster can cuts the mustard nearly as well.

The walsh hit so high you can barely hear it, but you definitely know it's there.

How is it that me saying they sound nice, any different, than you assuming they don't? At least I have the advantage of listening to them.
As for the monster can remark, well, the gauge/weight of the metal is all that would matter, subjectively, in a comparison.
The only thing special about the Walsh tweeter is the cone, otherwise it is a re-worked soft dome.
Mid/tweet = a tweeter that came for a 2-way speaker, that can dig lower than smaller tweeters.
But, I cross mine over at 9.5k. I thought it worth mentioning as the tweeter I used is a 1.5" dome with a heavy magnet structure.
 
I'm always saddened when I read of the glory that is the Ohm F series, and how complicated and fragile they are.

I own Walsh 300's, but would love to hear a properly restored set of F's.
 
I have always wondered how the "Walsh-like" Ikonoklast single/dual tweeters from Warren Gregoire would work in some situations:


These have always intrigued me, and I have come close to trying a set of them. Note the above link is a page that has a few speakers, down at the bottom are the tweeters that can be purchased as separate items. Not sure if these are even still available though.....
