Watkins woofers in quantum line

Schematic

I have a schematic for the QLS-1 and another for the Q2, showing wire colors, VC1, VC2, etc. If I reduce the size to 122 KB as required on this site, the characters are not legible. I will email the schematic(s) to anyone who is interesed. Contact me at bocoogto@charter.net

Believe it or not, before I disassembled my crossovers, I double checked there wiring against the schematic and everything matched up perfect. As I mentioned in my project thread, I have ordered all of the capacitors used in the crossovers circuit and will put them on a circuit board. Looks to me like they were smoking something back in the late 70’s while they were assembling these boy’s. The assembly on the crossovers is sub-par to say the least, especially for something that cost as much as a small car back then.
If you have any questions please ask and at least I can tell you how mine are connected.
Also did yours have the dacron stuffed inside the cabinets. I still don’t know how much to put in, but based on the comments from everyone including Bill Watkins, They need quite a bit to keep the woofer in control.

Sorry for the late reply but I have backproblems and can't work on the pc. I am still waiting for the woofers and looking for replacement potentiometers on the crossover. Thank you all for your help so far. I will keep you posted on further advancements!
To Banff: my cabinets are stuffed with white material, I don't know if this is original or not.
 
Forgot to ask: anyone know where I could order replacement potentiometers and selector on the net? values are 5 ohm, 25 watt. However it seems that there are different types: constant impedance, L-pad, ...
I have got no idea which ones to choose, anyone can tell me from the scheme on www.infinity-classics.de

I just ordered 4 pots from Harmon International and received them about 3 days ago. They are 5 ohm wire wound pots. I don't know about the wattage but it is about the only part that they still sell for the QLS-1. I think I paid about 9 bucks for each. They actually feel pretty smooth when you turn them. Are your cabinets packed from top to bottom with the white stuff?

Hey Banff, yep my cabinets are filled with the white stuff top to bottom. Is it possible to order online from Harman? I contacted Harman Europe, but here there is nothing available.

Meridian, are the pots missing ?? They will clean up ok if you disassemble and use some of the techniques posted on AK. Check out the speaker forum, as the pots are very similar to the old Acoustic Research models. I've had all mine apart and they cleaned up good. They were in better shape internally than they looked from outside. I've pictures if it would help get you started.
 
hi kencat, the pots are indeed missing, as is the selectorswitch, the crossoverplate and other parts of the crossover...
The former owner threw away the woofers and messed up the speakers :tears:
But with the help of this forum I'm getting them back together again:banana:
So anyone knows where I could order these pots online?

Meridian,

keep scouring ebay (and any other sources) for originals, which may be connected to crossovers etc.. That way you know you're getting original stuff.

Look for a PM Bud. A good lead.
 
woofers arrived

hi kencat; I sent you a pm. (sorry I was too late!)

to the others from the fanclub: the woofers arrived, work on the speakers continues and soon I will post pictures of the qls1 restored.

I am very intrigued by the DVC design of these woofers now that I have read through a few posts about them.

The QLS5's I just picked up need a refoam and one of the mids needs the voice coil required to the binding posts. Curious, after the refoam, if there are problems with the woofers, can the VCs be replaced? Where can they be purchased since they are so specialized.

If you have a multi-meter you can check the DCR of the coils yourself at the terminals, should read around 2.5 ohms and 5 ohms.

I checked the impedance of all the drivers. With the exception of the damaged midrange, they all checked out. So it would seem the VCs are in tact and new surrounds will solve the problem. Ordering them from eSlay now. I think I can salvage the dust covers.

I also tore down and rebuilt the EMITs. I refinished the alum faceplate by wire brushing the surface oxidation and then clear coating. They have a nice industrial look now.
