Webcor Console

Anyone know anything about this Webcor console? I'm picking it up for free tonight. Owner says it works but the volume is stuck on high. I'm basically hoping to scavenge this for parts for my Zenith console that's giving me problems. Ideally I'd like to take the turntable from the Webcor and put it in my Zenith console. Thoughts?

I would suggest that any equipment this old is likely in need of a rebuild. This turntable has or soon will have the same issues with old grease as the zenith does, it would probably make more sense to simply focus effort on rebuilding the zenith, rather than altering it to accept a different turntable in similar condition which doesn't physically fit properly.

That console looks to be in pretty nice shape. Does it have a stereo tube amp in it? Might be worth fixing that one up. If you aren't interested move it on to someone who would like it. Lots of people would be interested in the amp provided it's tube, less in the whole console.

The Webcor is 1966 or later and solid state. What problems are you having with the Zenith changer, they are generally easy to rebuild and parts are available.

I started a different thread earlier in the week about my zenith. The platter doesn't start spinning unless I let it sit for about 15 minutes and even then it spins intermittently. I called two local repair shops that were recommended multiple times on this forum and they told me that I can bring it in but that they probably can't fix and won't be able to find parts for it if it needs parts. That didn't exactly instil any confidence in me that it was even worth it to bring the turntable in to be looked at. I followed multiple videos online and took apart the motor and got rid of all the old grease and re greased everything that didn't help. I think it might be the idler wheel. I'm told that they aren't made anymore and that for around $30 I can send in the idler wheel I have and have it rebuilt. I ordered a replacement idler wheel and I'm waiting for that to come. I also followed someone's advice and ordered a rubber treater that might give the old idler wheel some of it's rubber qualities back. I've spent about $55 so far and I'm not even sure that I've found the solution yet. I just got the free console home, pulled out the turntable from that and plugged it into my zenith console and it's working! So I'm very happy. I'd like to get a new needle and cartridge, can someone tell me how I figure out what to purchase? Also I don't know anything about the amp, if someone wants to tell me what to look for to figure out if it's worth trying to salvage please let me know and I will take a look. Thanks for your help!

I did some digging, it is indeed a BSR turntable. The Cartridge is BSR Type C1. Any ideas on where I can pick one up? Found one on Ebay for around $50 in England, with shipping it's gonna be around $80. There's gotta be a cheaper option?

If you cleaned and oiled the motor then it is the idler wheel and motor mounts that is causing you problems.

The Zenith changer uses a far superior cartridge than what is in the BSR/Webor and is much easier on records.

Why, that BSR while OK for an economy model is no Voice Of Music. It's lower performance, tracks at heavier weight, and also much harder to find parts for. Restore the VM your Zenith likely has, it's a better changer.

Any suggestions for restoring the Zenith? Like I said, I called two local shops that were recommended on this forum. One doesn't do repairs anymore and the other said it was a long shot. I've ordered an idler, so we'll see if I managed to find the right one. Just not sure where to start.

My go to for styli is Gary at The Voice of Music. ( He also is a good source for Zenith parts you may need) You will need to know what cartridge you have before you can order a replacement though.

If the Zenith has a VM changer, fix it. There isn't much to go wrong with the drive system. If the motor is working, the only other things are the idler wheel and related parts or motor mounts as orthophonic suggested. A spring pulls the idler into contact with the motor pulley and platter drive rim. If the spring is missing or weak, that will cause your symptoms. Of course, make sure the rubber on the idler is in good shape.

BTW, what the heck is on the left side of the Webcore? Are those four candles or is it a bar?

:D

The Zenith has a VM changer. I'm waiting for the new idler wheel to arrive. If I wanted to replace the motor mounts and the spring where would I find those parts and how do I know which part (what size spring etc.) to get?

The webcore has a rack that holds 6 cocktail glasses on the one side. The console itself needs a lot of work. It's got a lot of water damage and smells like a smoky bar. I may try to sand it all the way down and re-stain it. In terms of the BSR platter that's in it, it seems to work great. The only issue is that the volume control doesn't work. I think a new cartridge is in order but the volume doesn't seem to adjust at all. Any idea how to fix that?
