Wharfedale W60 score! Now what? (vc rub/re-cap)

Good Morning friends- I wanted to share my good fortune at obtaining these lovely early dome cone tweetered (not the purple pancake) Wharfedale W60's. (Actually a long time ago, but finally getting around to playing with them. Also, I have questions.

Hooked them up, and the sound is "meh," but as promised, the soundstage is terrific - even in the terrible acoustic environment that is my living room. (probably one of the reasons the sound is so underwhelming.) I can easily imagine how they would pair well with some tubes. I have my eye on a Fisher 800c, but right now, my Sansui QR-4500 is sufficiently gooey-sounding for my eclectic playlists of Jazz, Bluegrass, Instrumental Pop, Wurlitzer Organs, etc.

Definitely needs recapping. Also, one of the mids has voice-coil rub. Crap.

Re-cap: I'd love to go down the rabbit-hole of researching and taste-testing capacitors, but I am caring for elderly parents and don't have much time to think. I know there are some Wharf-heads out there that could just spell it out. (maybe you have extra, and are willing to sell?) If so, I'd appreciate it very much! Current cap is rated at 4MFD.

Voice Coil rub: Noticeable in the lows. I loosened the 4 bolts and scootched the magnet around to no avail - I think I might have made matters worse? I'd be willing to buy a replacement speaker(or speakers to match) until I can try my hand at rebuilding. Again, if someone had some plug-and-play suggestions, I just want to listen to some music at the end of some long, frustrating days.

BUT - In the mean-time, I'd also love to find out more about the possibility of re-rehabilitating that mid. Do I need to do both to keep them matched? I know nothing about this process except that it looks like you need to have your shniz together tool and material-wise.

Placement: I feel like these need to be elevated 10 or 12 inches? I am already pushing my luck with the wife, so I can't get too radical. My living room is like a bowling alley, and I like having speakers along the fireplace wall, as I do a lot of listening from the kitchen, and this way I can fill the house with music without cranking. Suggestions?

Thanks folks! I am looking forward to hearing from you and contributing what I can.

When you say dome tweeter do you mean purple donuts? If so I STRONGLY recommend finding some of the later ones with cages and retrofitting the cages before the glue fails.

Dayton film caps are cheap and so much better than the original black and red things which are almost universally garbage. Although some will say you need PIOs to get the most out of these, I used Daytons in my W70Ds and that seems OK.

Sorry, no advice on your mid. It might be able to be fixed by someone more skilled than I...

You have Alnico mids. I'm sure I have a replacement mid or two. Yeah, replace caps with 5% Daytons. Ive a/b tested Daytons and vintage PIO. The Super 3 tweeter can handle modern poly caps with ease. PIO caps cause second order harmonic distortion, sounds dull. My ears want to hear the highs.

Ah, Yes - W70's! Duh. Brainfart.

Soo, did I fark up that mid by undoing them bolts, or what? I was reading about making a jig with PVC pipe and some screws to align a voice coil. Would this hack work in this case?

Mr. B, I'd be into buying a mid, or mids whichever is more appropriate.

Thanks so very much for plain-English advice so far. Hitting up Parts-Express now!' I'm so encouraged, I am digging out my OTHER pair of W70s out of the basement today! Whoopee!

Second set is out of the basement. What do I need to know about these?
W70's or W70-somethings?

Cabinets are different. More furniture-like.
Different sized drivers. Have not had look at the tweeter. Took 4 outside nuts off the enclosure, but it didn't budge
Obligatory shot of the crossover. Do those type of capacitors go bad? (maybe I should just shut up and test them?)
One of the mids has a weird buzz around 1khz. looking into it.
Both mids have rubber surrounds? That normal?

Thanks again!

Yeah, you probably forked the mid driver by doing that. However, it could have already had a bad voice coil. In the future, don't do that. I did something very similar to a very early KEF B139 woofer. Oddly enough, after 2 days of futzing with it, I got it back. It is possible.

Heading off to reply to your PM!

They're both the W70's. The second pair is a later version, it has a real crossover! Not just a single cap on the tweeter with both the woofer and mid running full range. All the drivers should be the same size. Your first pair should have all Alnico drivers, red magnets. The Alnico Super 3 tweeter has a huge, gold magnet. Your second pair has a ceramic woofer and an Alnico mid. I would guess that your Super 3 in those is a later ceramic magnet version. Both the Alnico and ceramic Super 3 tweeters are darned near identical in performance.

Wharfedale used foam surrounds, rubber surrounds and cloth surrounds. It's normal.

So, both pairs had buzzing mids? That's really odd. Wharfedale drivers are very robust and don't go bad all that often. Have you checked your system for odd sound artifacts? Or, switched right with left speaker wires to see if the buzzing follows the system or the mid.

The buzz in the second mid is definitely the mid. (from the later W70's with the real crossover) Pulled it out and verified.

Now it's all coming back to me: When I stashed these in the basement in frustration and disgust a few years back, it was because of
that buzz - the cause of which MIGHT be a bad tinsel lead that I mickey-moused back together with a small section of wire from the terminal to the lead - but no improvement.
I think there is some hanky-panky going on where the lead meets the VC wire that is the real cause of the buzz.

Probably should just go ahead and source some of these, too in anticipation of the poor outcome of further repair attempts on that driver.

Yeah, tinsel leads can be a source of pain and anguish. They're tender little buggers. They can break, and they can rub against the cone and make things rattly, buzzy.

Biggles

Harrrumph! I took another poke at that tinsel lead. I desoldered and re-attached at the little nub where the vc lead meets the tinsel. Still sounds fizzy.

It does not sound like VC rubbing, but when I work the the cone, I can make it lightly click if I apply veeeeeery gentle pressure in just the right spot.

I'm flummoxed.

RG

Well, that blows. While ever so gently pressing, do a visual on the spider as you're doing it. Maybe the spider has come loose, causing the voice coil to get a little wonky.

Biggles

Still sounds fizzy when back in the cabinet? No wires resting against the back of the cone either? Dang.
