Wharfedale W60?

PierceH, what woofercooker said is correct. I think those are w30's. That is one model I have never run across or seen. I cannot comment on coil vs no coil on them. I can state the capacitor is fpr the tweeter. I can't see how it would cause a woofer problem. Changing the cap would likely help those tweeters, but I think there is another issue going on with them.

Hi Guys - I hope it's ok to hi-jack this thread but I wondered if any of you out there can confirm whether my speakers are W60 D or E's or something completely different. I was given these a few weeks ago but other than Wharfedale badges on the front they dont seem to have a model number/name. Both the purple tweeters were shot and on investigation the aluminium wires passing under the purple dome have all corroded through so a replacement set of spare Leak tweeters of similar vintage were substituted until they can be repaired. They still sound a bit dull/muffled so guess the caps need doing too.

The Wharfedale factory burned down some time in the late sixties, proper spec sheets are more than difficult to find. Even if we did have them, there isn’t much on them. What are you all looking for? Power requirements? Amplifiers of the time we’re generally about 4 to 25 watts, so there’s that. Frequency range? Pah, they generally went down to 40 hz, give or take 5 hz. So many stated that they went up to 16k. Turns out, paper cone tweeters start dropping off around 8k and die soon after that. That’s about all you’re gonna get for 1965 spec sheet. Instead of worrying about numbers, replace the caps and resistors in the crossovers. Listen for a coupla weeks with all your favorite music, then decide on whether to pass them along or not.

Those are W60C as they have a port. I believe the D's look pretty much the same but are acoustic suspension.

Ok - thanks infullview ......so the W60 and W60B models are ported 2-way speakers, the W60D and W60E are 3-way closed cabinet while the W60C is a combination of the two being a 3-way ported design. That's a good start. Now, according to the rear badge mine seem to be supplied by Radio Shack in Hong Kong and are unusual in that the rear panel is fixed while after unclipping the grill (which is on brass clips) the whole front panel comes off complete with speakers for access. The cross-overs and L-pads are on the inside of the rear panel. Did Hong Kong have their own factory like the US seems to have done or were they shipped over complete from the UK - and has anyone seen this removeable front panel design before?

The Radio People made some of the finest cabinets for Wharfedale and were their distributor in the far east. They made various modifications to the cabinet but all the electronics were from the UK.

Ah OK, thanks. The cabinets certainly are a work of art - head and shoulders above the horrible cabinets that Leak were producing - with the best of British design inside! I'm looking forward to getting them up to scratch again so that I can compare them to my Leak 2060-660 hybrids (same tweeters as the Wharf's, excellent mid and 13.5" bass!)
 
Hijacking this thread again :). Longtime lurker/first time posting here. I have a pair of Model 60's B.I.C. endorsement quality. Any recommendations for a cap replacement? Is it worth going for a proper oil/paper cap or should I aim for a modern replacement?

What's in them now? I'm pretty sure these use NP electrolytic caps. That's what you should put back in. A lot of people have recommended Mundorf, but I think the generic parts-express NP caps will work just as well.
 
I used the regular Dayton replacements for Parts Express in my W70C's and they did the job wonderfully.
 
Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I just got a pair of W60's and would really like the value of the inductor coil on the crossover. Anyone have this information? Thanks!
