Wharfedale W70 (and similar) Experience

They were bought on the auction site from a local business that gets stuff from estate sales. They were sold as legit W70's. When I asked about the speaker terminals they didn't know anything . So you're right it's really on me. I should've required a look inside before purchase.

I've got no clue as to the drivers other than the Polydax cause it says so. Age? Who knows. I just don't know why anyone would do this, other than they were trashed and they couldn't find original parts. But the cabs are in great condition so your guess is as good as anyone's.

Crazy thing is that they sound really good.

Looks like he used film caps even if it's not all nice and tidy.. What brand/values are those capacitors?

From digging around online, my best guess is that the caps are SCR film caps from France, which seem to be essentially Solen's. Well regarded. So if that's true, there's a French theme going on here.

Even though it's a shame that this "mod" took place on such wonderful speakers, it seems like whomever did it pretty much knew what they were doing. At least from a sound standpoint. But why they did it, that is the $64k question.

i am in a long narrow room also (i split my garage) - my 70's are a little over 3ft apart, and my seating area is 7ft away.
I think the sound is better when I am about 5ft away.... (sometimes i move the couch closer or sit on the ottoman if i feel like being picky) I run my 70's with a dynaco 70 and a john miller super 6 preamp.
-quite pleased with this setup! ec

Welcome to AK Dan. Valencia?
Anywhere between $150 and $250 depending on condition, series, legs included etc. in LA you will be on the higher end of that value since you have a larger market there.
If you have stuff to sell and make available others here, it needs to be done in Bartertown section only and you need to be a subscriber to do that.

I just upgraded to a Nakamichi TA-3A and PA-5 combo with my w70s and it's like a whole other world, especially off the tuner. On my little 20wpc Denon Receiver, they had good imaging and soundstage depth... But with the Nak, the clarity is finally where it should be and the presence is better. I think maybe overpowering the hell out of them woke them up a bit.
Mine are about 10' apart and I like them as far apart as possible... I also like mine about 10" off the ground but that takes away a little bass. Haven't tried them angled yet, but that 'sounds' right to me... If I sit in front of them the imaging is headphone like so I think maybe a little angle might help.
I also got a set of Klipsch Belle drivers with the Nak setup and am gearing up to build some cabs but I wonder if they'll actually replace the Wharfies or not... Honestly am not sure they could be better.
Would really like to find a nice tube amp to run them with... Although I have an almost completed Pass f5 to swap in soon, so that might be an interesting move too.

I know this thread is older but it seemed like the best place.

Here are my newly acquired W70's.

Not sure what year/Rev they are. 3 Drivers and they are not ported and I have not peeked inside yet. They also came with original stands.

They were in pretty good condition but I cleaned them up with some Howard's Restor. and am pretty proud of the results. (Howard's is a incredible product btw!)

Now the hunt for a little tube integrated to make them sing.
