What A Joke! (spacecraft 'slams' into moon). . .

Well, I'm glad that I didn't hold my breath this morning waiting for the explosion flash and 'six mile high' debris plume that never happened.

Over-hyped, over-publicized, and mostly over-speculated.

In fact, the only way they could tell that both spacecrafts actually impacted was through infrared spectrum viewing, data transmitted prior to the impact, and the loss of telemetry after the crash.

I equated this event to NASA having the expectations of grand finale fireworks show, but only producing a non-visible pop from a single firecracker that turned out to be a dud.

At $79M (for the spacecraft, and getting it there) the pricetag definitely widened more eyes and dropped more jaws than the 'event' itself.

If I had more than two thumbs, I'd be pointing THEM down too. :thumbsdn: :thumbsdn:

From what I had understood, it wasn't going to be anything super spectacular. They said even with large scopes, they doubted many amateurs would be able to see much was what I had read.. Supposedly it was going to be infrared, and spectrometers they were expecting to use to see any sign of water in the plume..

Not sure about that yet, but they did say the plume was 20km wide and 10km high.. I call that kind of substantial for something the size of a bus hitting the surface.

They said it will take them a while to analyze all the data...

That sounds like what they had been saying would happen on the news. I guess people want to see the big exaggerated "hollywood" explosion. If they come up with proof of water then I say all that money was well spent.

That must have been an "old school" sized projectile. What a colossal waste of funds... but to be expected I guess.

If we seriously want a base on the moon, to further space exploration, then knowing if there is enough water for our use is really important. So that being the case, and we do have a future base there, then no, this wasn't a waste of funds.. If we do find there is sufficient water there, yet we don't build a base on the moon, then yes, it was a waste of funds.

Just had to post this in two places, huh? OK, here's my response for non-subscribers who can't see the other thread:

The point wasn't to put on a show, though they thought we might have seen one. The point was to provide an opportunity for various kinds of analysis of parts of the moon's surface that haven't been studied, and we'll have to wait for the results to see how that came out. There's a lot more to it than visible light.

Well, yeah, that was sorta my reaction, too. We can land a man on the moon, but can we hit it with a rocket? I dunno, the expression just doesn't seem to quite have that zing to it.

NASA's facing cutbacks, so they're aiming low, I guess.

The point of all this is research and a lead up towards a manned base on the moon. If water is present it will save NASA untold $$$$.

Yeah , I trust India's state-of-the-art technology more than NASA. Dell customer "support" and aerospace technology may be at different levels of progress. Just sayin'.

I contend that bitching how the government allocates money makes this an inherently political thread.

I will not post my response and rebuttal because I don't think politics belong on AK.

Seriously, though, the way the yahoos were hyping this on the radio, that's what I was expecting!:sigh:
