What A Joke! (spacecraft 'slams' into moon). . .

OK, this is gonna be a weird day, I can tell. First, I thought for a second someone wanted to slam me into the moon, till I read the thread title twice, now you're posting pics of Marvin the Martian. I actually used him as my avatar for awhile, on another forum, a cool animated gif. :D As far as the "test", I think learning whatever we can is good, obviously, but I think our people need to evaluate the best ways to spend that money. :scratch2:

Wasn't it an outsourced NASA project?

lol no. Good one though.

That's true, but they are unsure of how much is really there. The point of this mission is to try and determine if it's enough to make use of or not...

I'm aware. I was just saying that water has been discovered. Some people like to discredit the scientific community altogether.

I contend that bitching how the government allocates money makes this an inherently political thread.

I will not post my response and rebuttal because I don't think politics belong on AK.

I agree. But we can still discuss the impact of NASA/Space research.

Of course it does. That's what the media does these days - hype everything in pointless and stupid directions.

It's a lot less fun to listen to the scientists who say there will be very little visible debris than it is to fill people's heads with "Armageddon" style explosions.

Science isn't always something that fits into the 24 hour news cycle!

Oh don't get me wrong they will still spend a boat load no matter what but if they can find sufficient water to make electricity and oxygen it will make a base on the moon much more feasible.

Most scientific research is actually pretty boring.

Make electricity with water: how? You would rather make oxygen using
water and electricity!

The main advantages of finding significant amounts of water on the
moon are that humans could drink it, and also it would make it possible
to build concrete structures using local materials (no reinforced concrete
but with the lower gravity a lesser problem).

The main sources of electricity on the moon are likely to be photovoltaic
cells (as in most other aerospace applications) and nuclear energy.

about 4.6 billion years ago scientists think a proto planet about the size of mars smashed into the earth. The debris that was ejected is now our moon Im pretty for sure in that time the moon has been hit by a comet or 2 so there has to be water around there some where.
Evidence for this collision was found by the astronauts of the Apollo Moon landing missions. They turned up lunar rocks that have oxygen isotope compositions which are nearly the same as the Earth.
