Good morning from ORD

I got over stimulated watching the F-15s, maybe it was the pot of coffee. Here goes

F-15 imagined, then designed to out-turn, out-accelerate, out-climb, out-perform and outgun anything in belly to belly dog fights
- Tremendous weight to thrust HP ratios

F-16 Same design goals, single-engine lower-cost to produce in large easy to maintain numbers
. Designed for the Air Guard which was large at this time.

F-18 was a 2 engine same design goal version of the F-16 for the Navy
- was grown (2x ?) into the super Hornet for more of everything in deep blue water.

A-10 Designed for total superiority in close-in air-support of the US-NATO Army in Europe, vs USSR tank armies
designed to go nose-to- nose in a slugging match with Soviet Tank Armies attempting to steam- roll W. Germany
stacked in mile-wide wedge-formations of tanks followed by APCs , wedges probably stacked a hundred deep like pancakes.
The goal was to punch through NATO to the English Channel in 3 days ignoring losses

German countryside was remade into forested hills and berms, steep canals and impossible to cross road grade (tank traps), all designed to funnel the tens-of-thousands of tanks and APCs into narrowed passages. Hills were covered with dug in German anti-tank crews. Houses in towns and villages ground floors 2ft thick walls.
- Passages where the A-10s could go to work on them from 200ft in a shoot-out
- A-10 pilot riding in a titanium bath tub , plane designed to fly with holes all over it and torn off wing sections
- A 10 can stay over the battlefield for hours looking for prey on the ground. There is no substitute.

German Stuka was the starting point for the A-10 including interviewing Hans Von Rudel Stuka ACE,
- I believe he had hundreds of Soviet tank kills, and actually sunk a USSR Battle Ship with a Stuka, right down the smoke stack

When the A-10 was new, they demod it for the Congress etc at the Andrews AFB air show,
- full-speed ground attack simulation, most impressive thing I have ever seen. Turns were amazing I thought the wings would buckle. Love the sound of the engines.
- Coming in below 200ft and going to work using their perpendicular figure 8 ground-attack down to est 200ft
before hard banking as their partner came in from a right angle, relentless close in ground attack
- In war, they would have dumped 16K lbs of anti-tank cluster-munitions to get the party started
- Then gone to work with the 30MM DU cannon
- 30MM liquefies as it penetrates the armor (20in ?) becoming super-heated, exiting tank hull into the inside the liquid flashes to the temperature of the sun instantly. Tiny hole, large explosion when the hydraulic fluid ignites.

This is the moment a US Navy pilot gave a shocked resident a very close look at his F18.
The fighter/bomber streaked past an apartment block on the banks of the Detroit River at the weekend.
It was part of a tactical demonstration fly-past to open a speedboat race in the North American city.
Officials waived rules to allow the Navy flyers to swoop under 100ft along the waterway.

Someone put in the wrong info on the A-10, it has the GAU-8 Avenger 30mm canon , the whole plane was designed around the gun.

Love the fact we keep finding reasons to keep the A-10s in service and in theater. Still no viable, much less better, aircraft for the job.

The irony of blasting this while I typed the above is not lost on me. Both can be true. A-10 awesome. War is hell and we can’t seem to evolve past it.
