I still get choked up if I start to dwell on the death of Kirsty MacColl. It is a tragic story that I really don't feel like trying to summarize; I need to leave the scab on that wound today.

I remember being a mess that December of 2000, as Rob Buck of 10,000 Maniacs passed away the following day.
 
So many who died tragically too young...

But, I'd have to say the one that affected me the most was definitely John Bonham. I'd always been a fan of Led Zeppelin, but REALLY got heavily into them my freshman year of college, when I bought my first stereo. Much to my roommate's chagrin (who was into disco), I was constantly playing Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath on the stereo we shared (my Marantz 1030 integrated amp and Infinity Qb speakers and his Technics turntable).

Tickets went on sale for the Chicago shows on September 25th. Back in the days before Ticketmaster, they were mail order only. I picked up a copy of the Chicago Tribune, to get the order form and was planning on stopping by the post office to pick up a money order later that afternoon. I learned of his death before I even made it to the post office. I was devastated. I was a drummer and Led Zeppelin was my favorite band. I was finally going to get to see them live, but it wasn't to be.
 
Some deaths are anticipated, and can even seem overlong in coming. It's the unexpected ones that seem to affect me more. Not that they died tragically young, but I remember being saddened at hearing of the passing away of John Duffey (The Seldom Scene) and Derek Bell (The Chieftains).
 
There is only one person on my list, John Lennon. Back in high school a friend of mine said I would buy Lennon's belly button lint if it were possible. I laughed at the time but he wasn't far from the truth. I know as time passed people found out he wasn't the most pleasant of humans in the way he treated women and his first son. The music will always be first in most people's minds and he had very few equals in that regard.
 
Lennon. Because of the stance he took on many issues, his contribution to music, and the needlessness and cowardliness of the way he was ambushed. The worldwide grieving which accompanied his death was only matched by Lady Diana. The uniting factor between them was that they both were champions of the common people.
 
Those that died in the Lynyrd Skynyrd plane crash. I had a ticket to see them a couple months after that occurred
