The phone was in my hand, pointed towards the speakers recorded while sitting in my listening chair. The recording I can tell hears a lot more room with playback over the same system in the same chair. The phone picks up the echo I cannot hear while listening to the same material direct (without mic). Yeah, I have used similar to what you are describing when I ripped vinyl to flac and like you say, none of the room.. The mic "hears" far differently than I do!

Same thing I hear when I do it. It sounds so bad compared to what I hear. Still don’t see the point

Same thing for me -- anything I record on my phone sounds awful compared to even recording on other recording technology, like the built-in mikes my Nikon 5200 or my old DV video cameras, but even those sound pretty bad compared to the real thing. I'm tempted to experiment with some of my microphones as input for the Nikon and see how that goes.
The iPhones do a "good" job compared to other phones IMO but still sound like crap. I could not find any more of my system but did find some close to the stage ones at an awesome venue we have I will post shortly. Was listening to them last night and they sound like crap.

[1] Though only until Friday, because I've taken voluntary severance as a path to semi-retirement, and am returning to my software-entrepreneurial roots!
All mics and speakers interact in the space differently. But either way they produce and pickup frequencies we might not hear in real time listening to our systems. It is this we can see are systems and and analyze what might be going on as things we cant really hear, that might effect the vid. I have some complete failures that I'll post tonight. I also have some that changing the speakers made the particular mastering play and record better in my space. That's why I have at lest three speaker/amp setups in one system in the first place. I have a choice to match them to the style of music, volume level and what the mastering sounds like to me at any given time.
If I wanted a perfect recording I can record at 24bit WAV or 15 IPS on my R2R, but that tells me nothing on how a speaker sound in a room when recorded. Frequencies I might not be hearing that effect the sound, like bass nodes.
I get sound propagation and recording, I did it professionally for 23 yrs. And I have not pushed back on any of the cell phone post other than I don’t get it and it’s all good
. My only push back has been the attack’s for any disagreement or difference of opinion by the OP and they do it in every thread . I am actually going through a thumb drive I found in my backpack and loading stuff, stereos, waterfalls, live venues and drag races, all recorded from my iPhone.

No, I posted earlier about it. It was ear splitting working were we where but with all the background noise (pumps and ventilation running) in the space I was in you couldn’t hear the Sonar in the recording at all. The whole SNR thing
This one I was in the studio when it was recorded. I know what the original sounds like and my system nails it now that it is set up in the loft, I remember this sounding really great in the other loft that is why I attempted to capture it with my phone, but it sounds meh .

As for the usefulness of recordings with a cellphone, (or even a much better setup) and posting it on YouTube, yeah it doesn't tell you much at all about the actual sound, certainly nothing about how hi rez music sounds! I only did it a couple times on Glenn's thread.. Was pretty awful but I had fun with it..
Just looked at this one, God what a messy house! This was before I went through all the speaker mods which I'm sure wouldn't have made any difference if I was going to make it a new video..

What you did was share music you like, your system, your killer living space, and your beloved pooch. You showed use how you enjoy music, and the music is just part of the vid.
But you got me thinking we need a doggie listening partner thread. Just random vids of members listening to music and the dogs in their life hanging out with them
