What car do you wish you had BACK, again?

All of us have probably sold a car, and later, wished we hadn't...

Here's mine: this may sound odd... but I miss my 1968 Opel Kadett station wagon. Was originally a 1500 (motor that was doomed from its inception), but I wound up retro-fitting a 1900 engine from a wrecked Opel GT. Put air conditioning on it, even (under-dash kit). Had the gauge package and seats from a Kadett Rallye, and re-painted Chevy Vega wheels with hand-fitted center-caps and chrome lug nuts. White, with blue interior and blue wheels.

The reason? It'd get 30mpg AVERAGE (35 on the highway!), and haul ANYTHING (including a**, with the GT engine. :D ). In a dire emergency, you could get 10 people into one of those things... they wouldn't be comfortable, but they would FIT.

I could really use that car now. About the only thing I'd change, would be to retro-fit an EFI fuel system on it (carburetors be d***ed, after many years of having to work on them, I never plan to do THAT again!)... and probably a better stereo system (naturally :D )...

So, who's next?

Regards,
Gordon.

78 Volkswagen Scirrocco. Was originally my daily driver/SCCA SS/GT racer, and in it's later incarnation it was a frickin' blast to drive, just non stop smiles! After it was retired from SCCA competition, I heavily modified the drivetrain, and did further suspension mods. Just the most fun you could have with your pant's on!

I drove an Opel Kadett GT which a girlfried owned. Looked like a mini-Corvette without the performance. It was a really neat vehicle, but only a 2-door with barely a back seat. Drove it once and got a ticket.

What I miss is the 70 VW Van I had back in the 80's. It might have been a '71, can't recall. It had the 2-litre mill with A/C and could transport 9 people to concerts, races, camping and whatever. And all their stuff.

It would go almost anywhere (forded streams with it, climbed sand-dunes), go over flaming logs and saplings, and I have never been stuck. An unbelieveable multi-use vehicle.

1968 Impala Fastback, 327 motor, 3-speed, with factor 8-track (that used fiber optic cable to illuminate the associated indicators) .... Sold it 'cause I was becoming a 'family man' :tears:

Speaking of Bavaria

'73 BMW 2002

Got to meet a representative of nearly all the many police forces in and around Washington, DC, during the 2 years I owned it.

Go all day at 70+mph and get 30MPG doing it.

(If I coulda only afforded a 2002tii...)

I've never personally had a car I'd want back (currently driving a Jeep ZJ I'm happy with, previously was a Mazda 626 and a Subaru GL).

My mother's family, on the other hand, had a trove of vintage cars in the 1980s. A '64 Lincoln 4-door (suicide doors!), a '66 Lincoln 2-door, and a '51 bulletnose Studebaker. Their mechanic was terrible and they gave away all the cars towards the end of the decade. I wasn't in a position to adopt them at the time, but I wish I could have figured something out.

63 Healy

63 Austin Healy Sprite with a Fiat 124 twin cam and trannie. Lowered, detroit locker and cut down eldo axle shafts. American Racing slots with G60's. Was crazy to buy it, but what a fun ride. Sold it after 2 years, and lost $250. Worth every penny!

My '69 SS Chevelle 396.........despite being the small 325hp version, Turbo-hydromatic 3 speed console, A/C, Auto-windows, Speed Control, and just a lead sled in general. Could still smoke those bias-ply tires.

Traded-in for a brand new 1976 Chevette..........GAS CRISIS and INSURANCE ISSUES

BUT no match for a 69' 427 Camaro.............DUSTED. However, it won't rival my '02 T/A Firehawk.

My '61 Ford Econoline van... you could add oil as you drove ...as long as someone was'nt sitting on the inside engine cowling...

Bought a 68 Firbird 400 when I got out of the service,4 speed, hood tach the works, sold it and got a 240Z wish I had them both.:sigh:

My 70 LS6 chevelle, Built the engine to 482ci(from a 454), headers, to big isky
camshaft, 4:11 gears, I used to love to scare the **** out of the rice burners,
that thing had a wicked idle. I'm going to relive my youth with another this
year. I have the frame and body. Need time, and cash.
