What caused the decay of the U.S. auto manufactureres

We have as much HP in a 2.5 liter engine now as we did during the early pollution control years. Moving only half the weight makes a big difference.

My 2016 Charger V-6 spins 1,600 rpm at 80mph... it likes to run right at 77 mph where I can get 36 MPG. Any faster or slower it decreases- at 60 mph it gets 30MPG (frequently shifting between 7th & 8th gear) at 80 mph it gets 28-29 MPG.

It is not the chosen gear that is unacceptable, but the frequent shifting. I wonder whether they have a firmware update for this.

I did get snagged in a hidden camera trap here in ABQ. Going down to the VA hospital I have to drive through the worst part of ABQ. I got stopped at a light on Coal and Broadway that had 8 or more panhandlers milling about (homeless shelter on that corner), so when I got the green light I turned right onto Broadway and gave it a little bit of gas. The camera sign was behind me (to the north) while the camera was less than a block south, so it got me going 43mph in a 35mph zone... cost me $100. :mad:

No firmware update is needed, it is that the roads go up and down (hills and mountains) changing the load... by constantly shifting I didn't mean it it goes 7-8-7-8-7-8: going up an incline it will go down into 7th, going down the other side it will shift into 8th...until the next hill.
If I lived in the flatlands it would stay in 8th gear all day long... if it gets annoying I turn the cruise control off and drive it manually.

With my SUV, I find that driving through hilly terrain with the cruise control on makes the transmission shift up and down a lot. Without cruise on if shifts far less often.

At least it's not a 26 foot box truck trying to go through the mountains. I just drove one all the way from Atlanta, through Amarillo, Albuquerque, and Needles, to Monterey CA, and back.

I would be OK with frequent shifting- if it would even somehow manage to stay SOMEWHERE close to the speed limit. It's sucky to be in a 75 MPH zone, and not able to maintain a steady speed over 50MPH up hills...

Just look at what a clueless C.E.O did to an Americana home style resturaunt chain recently ! Totally out of touch with their core customer base ! Spent millions doing the change that nobody wanted and plunged the stock value and will most likely walk away with a golden parachute ! And who pays ? Employees , stockholders customers ! And this overpaid moron still walks away with a lot of money ! This post is not about the politics of the change just the stupidity of not knowing your core customer base. Which seems common these days !

The old electronics were somewhat unreliable... When Chrysler/Dodge/Plymouth first came out with their electronic ignition (1972 IIRC) everybody used to keep a spare module in the trunk as they were prone to failure when they got hot... symptoms were rapid misfires or complete loss of ignition... took about 5 minutes to swap out. You only had to know if yours was a four pin or five pin module, and you can still get cheap ones for $30. The "high performance" Orange boxes were the worst for failing, but the Blue "high RPM" boxes were pretty good.

Advance warning was leaking "brain goo" potting material.

My classic Mopars have home made "goo gutters" behind the ECU's to prevent paint loss on the firewalls.
