What else can go wrong?

Erik Tracy

Everyone's happy when the wizard walks by
Went on a nice relaxing vacation, settling back into the home routine.

That routine seems to include an ever growing list of things that have decided to break.

My garage door opener failed yesterday - came home from an errand and just as I was about to pull in, the door dropped like a guillotine! I barely got the car backed up. Seems like the latch that connects the door to the drive screw broke.

While trying to enjoy the rest of the day, the house got continually warmer. I knew the A/C was working the other day, but couldn't feel cool air anymore. Yup, the fan wasn't blowing.

Monday, we're having the termite exterminator come as we have some on the west side of the house on a long facia run.

And, I'm still trying to find a solar contractor to fix a failed microinverter for my panels.

What else could go wrong?

There's a good side to the door failure, no damage occurred and no one hurt. When things happen that is the desired consequences. Take care, damn the termites.

^^This^^ I've had openers fail and simply released the latch to the drive mechanism and the door operates as a normal, unassisted door.

That's what happened last week, at my house. Someone parked a wire metal shelf under the garage door- and the safety release cord of the door opener, got caught in the wire mesh- which caused the opener to become disengaged from the door. The door just sat there, half-way open, until I ran the opener cartridge back over to the door attachment arm, and snapped it back in.

If it's slamming shut- something is wrong with springs, for sure.

Regards,
Gordon.

The springs are totally fine, I found a broken piece of plastic that is part of the latch/release bracket that attaches to the drive screw.

I've got a guy coming out this morning. Based on a conversation about my obsolete opener being so old and no parts available, I'm looking at a new opener.

About to get on the phone to see which A/C contractor has the shortest list.

Had to replace a stove that failed spectacularly 2 months ago and had to replace the starter caps in my AC unit. My fan wouldn't start. You could hear the compressor run but without the fan turning it would stop. My fan would turn if I gave it some help then the AC would work. It's an easy fix to change the caps. It was 40 bucks for 2 caps in my unit. If a tech fixed it could have 10 or more times the cost

Used to be a joke in our house that it's Spring what's gonna break now.

My experience is things go wrong in 3s (triplets). You already have that number.

It still makes no sense that it fell if the springs and their attachments to the door are OK.

The way I figure it, is if the safety release broke (which I think it did), then that "releases" the door from the springs and the drive screw - it's just a door on rollers.

It fell before it was fully up, so gravity just did it's thing. More later if/when the garage guy shows up (supposed to be now to 12 noon). I haven't had much luck with contractors lately.

What could possibly go wrong?? Be careful of asking questions like that.
I was taking Emma from home in Fairfax, VA to Hagerstown, Md. on a Sunday morning so she could do the visiting preacher thing at the MCC church there, we were riding in our 5sp 2006 Honda CRV and on the way out, I mention liking the CRV as general transportation, and being uncertain what I'd even replace it with if something happened.
Well, later that day, on the way home I heard an odd sound like a banging on sheet metal kind of sound. and less than a mile from the house I stopped at a stop sign in our neighborhood and it stalled, never to restart again.

I figure that darned thing HEARD ME and tossed the timing chain out of spite! It was loyal enough to get me within walking distance of our house, but that was that.
And thats how I wound up with a Honda Fit ...

So, the garage door tech looked at my garage door setup and said 2 things were wrong:
1. the safety latch release broke
2. the springs were ok, but 'worn out'

The springs "should have" held to door up, but being worn out the weight of the door won and down it came. Apparently springs come in all sorts of sizes, winds, etc. My springs were the standard and only last for 5-8 years. I checked my records and had them replaced 7 years ago. New springs, motor, drive screw, remotes being installed now.

I got *very* lucky and had an A/C guy come out and sure enough, the fan starter capacitor burned out. The rest of the system checked out ok.

Termites on Monday, then the search continues for a solar contractor.

I need a beer. ;)

"What else could go wrong?"

You could have an appointment with your doctor and he could say to you: "We checked it out very carefully. I am terribly sorry, Sir. But I have to tell you that it is not benign."

Got it?
