Last Friday enjoyed a day trip visiting two places I'd not seen since I was a boy. Both are provincial parks featuring original or reconstructed lighthouses.

As the son of a Nova Scotia light keeper I lived on four lighthouse islands along the Nova Scotia coast and I in fact was born on an island as well. These places fascinate me.

The first was Burntcoat Head lighthouse, a reconstruction of the original dating from about 1900.

This is a beautiful free park with hiking trails, picnic tables and beautiful vistas

A view from the light tower at Burntcoat Head (the red cupola at the roof of the building above).

I had trouble stuffing my oversized shoulders through the hatchway leading to the tower. A steep drop too.

The tide is coming in! Burntcoat Head marks the greatest tidal range of The Bay Of Fundy (and planet Earth) at 53 feet 6 inches! At high tide the water laps the stairs in this photograph.

Many a tourist not heeding the many warning signs has drowned here. The water flows in with remarkable speed and ferocity.
