What song just made you stop and listen the first time you heard it?

G'day all, some pop/rock songs just seem to grab you and force you to listen. A couple of songs have done that to me. Nirvana's 'Smells Like Teen Spirit', REM's 'Losing My Religion', The Beatles 'Strawberry Fields Forever'.

It's incredible when a song can do that! Regards, Felix aka catman.

ipanema girl

The song I mostly remember to stop and listen was the girl from ipanema by the Gilbertos. way back at some time.

Caught my mind.

Paul

Sultans Of Swing. The first Dire Straits song I heard and I'd never heard guitar work quite like that.

John

"Good Vbrations", Beach Boys. I was late for school, but sat in my car listening until that amazing song was over.

Walked into a record store back in the day and the owner was cranking Stevie Wonder's Superstition with a pair of KLH Sixes. Immediate goosebumps. Been a fan of Stevie and KLH ever since.

That is a great one !

More Than A Feeling - Boston
Do Ya - ELO

Those songs both grabbed me right away .

Rag Doll by The 4 Seasons. I was 7 when that song came out in Summer 1964. Felt goose bumps then -- still do.

Radiohead- Freak. Because the quiet nice vocals followed by the guitar chord set slamming in. The way that the sweet vocals and the guitar alternated was unusual and pulled off very well. Then there was the content (which I identified with greatly. It was on the Radio and so was the cut version but I bought both discs that were out at the time and was not disappointed.
The other would have to be Sublime, 40 Oz to Freedom, Badfish. The guitar riffs sprinkled in really caught my interest. There is a strange mixing of styles and feelings that I love in that tune. It also brings back memories of a bygone day for me. I heard it on the sound system in a Nuevo Hippie clothing store.head shop up on a second floor over the Wildwood Boardwalk one summer night and stayed to listen to some of the disc. Then I bought it. It is still one of my all time favorites. I think Bradley Nowell was one of the most interesting musicians of my time and I am sad he is gone. So many times the terrible Angst that drives musicians to make original music also kills them in the end. I am not sure that one can have one without the other.:music:

Rush - Dreamline

I already had eclectic musical tastes (ranging from classical to pop to classic rock to jazz to metal to grunge/alternative rock to new wave...etc.) by that time (age 14) but even so I knew I was hearing something special here. My friends and I just played it again and again. Subsequent first listens (and even when listening to this day!) to many other Rush songs had the same effect.

Of course there are countless other songs from classic rock to classical to jazz to metal to pop etc. that made me "wow" from when I was a kid up to this day. Such is ongoing pleasure of discovering new-to-me (and even brand new) music and revisiting those songs that just never wear out and still amaze!

Purple Haze-Jimi Hendrix
Light My Fire-Doors
Anarchy In The UK-Sex Pistols
She Loves You-Beatles
For What It's Worth-Buffalo Springfield
I Am The Walrus-Beatles
Somebody To Love-Jefferson Airplane

Far too many great songs from my life time to list.

Roundabout - Yes
Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin
Suite: Judy Blue Eyes - Crosby, Stills & Nash
Taunta/Nantucket Sleighride - Mountain
Black Magic Woman/Gypsy Queen - Santana
Straight Tequila Night - John Anderson

A number of songs, too many to list, have caught my attention this way. Rock, metal, jazz, classical, Christian contemp and others have done so. "Away We Go" by Buddy Rich, "Eye of the Tiger" by Survivor, "My Favorite Things" played by John Coltrane and most recently, "Extradiefor" by Mortification caught me right away. Just to name a few.
