What song just made you stop and listen the first time you heard it?

Great thread. From early childhood- "Blue Rondo a la Turk" Dave Brubeck Quartet. I wanted to be Paul Desmond.

6th grade- "Black Sabbath" Black Sabbath played by our music teacher in elementary school.

"Eyes of the World" from any 1973-74 Dead show.

"Kashmir" Zep

Eruption/You Really Got Me by Van Halen

I was 16 years old taking driver's ed and the teacher wanted us to drive with the radio on so we would be accustomed to driving with "distraction". Obviously I was a big fan of the Kinks and while most covers never match the original, this one was different! On the other hand, when I heard the name of the group was Van Halen I thought to myself, "oh great, a cover version from some Dutch group who would never amount to much..."

Oops!

Yeah but can you imagine the impact of You Really Got Me by the Kinks back in 1964? Relative to what else was on the air back then it would have been like a brick to the face. I was going to mention it before I saw your post.

I can think of 2 right off hand but neither are rock/pop. One is Lyle Lovett's "If I Had a Boat". The first time I heard it was at a trade show. I was the speaker guy at the show and one of the sales guys had the Pontiac CD as demo material. That song stopped me in my tracks and raised a smile every time it came up in rotation.

The second is Mark Wills' "19 Somethin". It's a country tune about growing up in the 70's and 80's. The first time I heard it was in a farm store as I was picking up some fence panels. I stopped in the middle of an aisle and listened with a huge grin. When it was over I was convinced he had written the song about me.

Three Days by Janes Addiction.
I heard it in a record store, and bought it right away, and couldnt wait to get home and play it again.

My eyes! I hadn't seen that horrid spectacle since the 90's when I watched that movie, thanks for refreshing my memory!

I actually have both of those soundtracks (love my 80's soundtracks!) and they aren't bad. I really like that Limahl song, have ever since I saw the movie as a kid.

One of those cases where the soundtrack is so much better then the movie
Toto did everything on the OST except "The Prophecy Theme" which was done by Brian Eno.

Did you get to see the Sci-Fi channels two mini-series Dune (2000) and Children of Dune (2003) fantastic both, and their soundtracks are great.

Graeme Revell and Tim Simonec did the OST for Dune
Brian Tyler did the OST to Children of Dune

I see at IMDB there is another Dune movie in pre-production fpr release in 2014

A couple off the top of my head and all 70's ones,
Them Heavy People-Kate Bush.
Oh To Be In Love-Kate Bush.
Billy Jack-Curtis Mayfield.
The Brothers Johnson-Strawberry Letter 23.
Middle Of The Road-Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep.

G'day all, speaking of Kate Bush, during that interesting last period of my school life hearing 'Wuthering Heights' rather blew my mind hearing it for the first time. Regards, Felix aka catman.

"Trouble every day" on "Freak Out" 1966; Mothers of Invention
"Us and them" on "Dark Side of the Moon" 1973; Pink Floyd
"Richard Lionheart" on "Monument" 1967; Hansson & Karlsson

...and many more...

My Kate Bush "aha moment" was with "Running Up That Hill."

Holly Dunn's "Why Wyoming" The first time I heard this I was stunned, it can still bring tears to my eyes. This song leads directly to distracted driving for me. Beautiful; THIS!!! should be Wyoming's State Song. It is sad that Holly Dunn is no longer in the music business but instead is an artist in painting.

Yea, the ST is at least good and I remember the movie being dismal. I never was much into Dune though, never even read any of the books.

And I'm a fair Toto fan so...

Didn't catch any of that, but thanks I might check out those ST! :thmbsp:

I also might re-watch Dune in order to reassess it...or at least make snarky comments at the screen with some friends in a MST3K type of way. :D

PS: Love your sig! Go SETI! :thmbsp: (Although I know, like any good science, there are plenty of Drake equation detractors, some who think it is overly optimistic, others who think it needs to be refined and updated; a new reformulation by Sara Seager was recently covered in a May edition of "New Scientist" in fact).

Speaking of Toto, I was immediately struck by "Africa" as a kid. :music:

Two come to mind:

2+2 by the Bob Seger System, I was blown away by the power of the message in that one...

Turn the Page will give me pause frequently also.

Also, Paradise by Dashboard Light by Meatloaf. For totally different reasons, it was so amazingly funny...

Watch the Dune 2000, and Children of Dune 2003 first these two where produced with the supervision of Frank Herbert's son Brian Herbert. I have read all of the books including those added by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson. Dune 2000, and Children of Dune 2003 are a vastly superior in every way to Dune 1987. The sound tracks to each are fantastic.

I walked into a record store one day in '78 and "Pump It Up" by Elvis Costello was playing. Became a huge fan for the next several years!

Tool's "46&2".

I'd heard material from their prior release on the radio (but didn't own it) but I remember hearing "46&2" when the stations first put it in rotation and thinking to myself "my gawd....this band and this drummer just skipped three levels".
