What the heck is this?

I've been enjoying my latest table - a nint Fisher MT 6225. Got it dialed in with anew cart and it sounds great.

But I'm just stumped as to what the round thingy on the front right base is for? I first thought a cuing light that needed a new lamp, but it's not really in the right spot for that.

When I look at images online, most 6225s do not have this, but a few do. I downloaded the service and owner's manuals, but in each this piece is absent.

Can someone clue me in!?

Is it built in or just user-applied with sticky back tape?

While I have not had it apart to say for sure, I'd say built in. If I google images of this TT, I see about one in ten have it. Perhaps it was a one year one off over the years of production.
 
I get your point about antiskating, but we should be so lucky (or maybe not) to live long enough for a slight tilt to wear the bearing to any meaningful degree,
 
OK guys now I'm really flummoxed! I had tested the TT after installing new AT cart for about 2 hours. Sounded really nice, cranked the volume to 1 o'clock on soft and hard passages, great sound, no background noise.

So after leveling it, I sat down for a listen and now if I get the volume past 10 o'clock, I get a huge hum. Not subsonic, sounds like about a 100htz hum. WTF? I'm sure the leveling was just a coincidence, but nothing else changed. :(
 
And just to add, there's no ground loop. TT plugged into receiver switched outlet, receiver alone plugged into wall switch.
 
I assume you moved the cables when leveling the table. Be sure they are all firmly connected, including the ground wire. Also assure that the cartridge wires are snug, and that the headshell is firmly attached to the tonearm.

If this doesn't solve the problem, you will need a multimeter to check for connectivity/continuity.

Edit - It should not make a difference, but try plugging the TT directly into wall outlet, rather than receiver outlet.

Yeah tried different outlets all connections snug. This is so odd, all I did was very gently raise the side of the table on the downslope, added wood shims. Then I did the final leveling with the feet. All I can think of is undoing these changes to go back to the way it was. Maybe having the feet screwed all the way in is picking up more vibrations, doubt it, but I'm at a loss.
 
The placement of that level will never get the TT perfectly level. Except for certain parts TTs are not very precision built and the more expensive they are the more precision it has throughout. If that were my TT I’d place a flat bottomed round level on the platter next to the spindle with the mat removed to get it as level as possible knowing it will never be perfect
 
I can't look at it for a couple of days to figure out the cause of the hum, will provide an update once I do. Thank you for the help so far.
 
..if you don’t care about (anti)skating or platter bearing wear. ;)

If anti-skate is applied with a spring, it doesn't matter. The forces involved will equalize wear in bearings. I am not talking about running tables at a 45 degree angle or anything like that.
