Well, it ain't pretty but it worked! It took me a while, given that I'm still pretting green at this stuff and my soldering is "novice grade" at best (yup, got the iron a bit too close to that black wire on my last connection, figures). That said I'm thrilled to report that the unevenness is now gone at all volume levels so it was absolutely worth it, and I was able to keep the loudness control which I wanted. Many thanks to all who contributed with knowledge, tips, etc. Can't begin to tell you how much I appreciate it. Cheers
