What's a cool looking receiver?

Don't forget the Yamaha CR1020, CR2020 and of course the CR2040 (Love the Green Glow) not to mention the Sonics :^)
Regards,
Jim

Careful of the CR1040, the driver boards are Unobtainium IIRC

You're correct, and I hope mine don't fail. If I remember correctly, I'm certain that the CR-440 did not have the driver boards in them. I use the 440 on a regular basis.

I love the way receivers look too :) Here are some of my favorites that I own...

If you want something that IS built like a tank I just picked this Pioneer SX-1250today! After sitting what looks like in a shed for 20 years and being dropped on it's side hard enough to break the dial glass, I gave a guy $200 for it, brought it home, plugged it in, and after playing with all of the switches I got it to where it is singing pretty darned sweet. All I need to do is deoxite all of the switches, clean out the 20 years of dust from the insides, replace the glass, polish the faceplate and put some oil on the veneer and it'll be almost as good as new!

A buddy of mine lent me his for a while and it was very hard giving it back....this image ain't his (...it's from the somewhere on the web), but this has gotta be one of the nicest looking late 70's Japanese receivers.

The Toshiba SA-7100.

I really really really really really like the Sansui 8080. It looks so cool I can't even tell you.

Do you know of another receiver that has a bunch of knobs and some dials.
I really like my receiver (STA-2300 Realistic), but it doesn't have needles/meters on it.

Is there another receiver that looks cool or spaceage or weird or something?!
I know...shiny things...call me shallow.

Thanks. I'll I'll refrain from posting for a long time after this question (unless I can help someone haha).

Ah, hello Julie, I see you have the "oohhh prrreeetty" virus. Welcome to the club, I have it too. Just look at some of the pics in this thread! I'm drooling!!! (Those fluorscan units get me so easy! Hard to beat those)! That Toshiba is very nice! I never thought of that one. I'd like to grab one of those someday, not to mention a couple of others I see here.
I try to balance it with performance though otherwise I'd be trying to buy a bunch of BOTL, MOTL stuff as well. Not that there is anything wrong with some of that, but as with most things the key is moderation.
Also pretty or cool looking is in the eye of the beholder.
I like stuff with lots of knobs, buttons, meters and lights and if the lights are different colors that's a further plus.
I like the big Sansui receivers like an 8080 or 9090 they have all that. I have a Yamaha CR2020 that I think is a little plain looking, but has plenty of knobs and buttons and 3 meters. I bought that unit for two reasons: 1) the pros here pushed me into it (glad they did) when I asked about it and the reason was 2) performance and sound.
I also have a Pioneer SX-1050 that I consider a very pretty unit. I have a SX-990 that I consider not so good looking save the different color function indicators. I have a Marantx 2238b that I consider very pretty when lit up. There's just something special about it.
I have a Pioneer CT-F950 that is really pretty too. My Nak 582 is butt ugly, but it's for performance over looks.
I still have more pretty to collect someday such as a nice big Sansui. I also like the Concept units and the Luxman's with the neat acrylic buttons.

Keep enjoying the pretties Julie, just don't get too over excited. Go for really good MOTL if you may be happy with those or better still, the TOTL units (Can't go wrong). The TOTL units have more prettiness due to more meters, lights, knobs, buttons, switches....
Want to see more pretty? try to find some pics of all silver Pioneer complete systems. Also there are some nice looking R2R units out there some place.
There are tons of pretty units out there.

Keep posting Julie with any questions or to just keep in touch with us, you'll learn much. Let us know how you are enjoying your gear, etc. I think many of us enjoy hearing how others enjoy the gear and such. It's a great hobby and quite healthy (except for the bank account, but what are ya gonna do).

I no alot of people are not going to agree with me, but I love the look of my Pioneer VSX-5000... My favorite non silver faced unit by far!

My receivers may not have as many knobs or meters, but I like the platinum face on my Zenith MC-7050

And the black face on my Realistic System 7,

I'm new to buying vintage gear. Here's mine, it's the only one I own and I think it looks pretty freakin cool. Harman Kardon 430.

A few others touched on the Technics SA- series I have the SA-500 receiver and after cleaning it up and playing with it. I couldn't part with it. My intent was to sell it but it is just too darn pretty. Price tag is right I think I gave $5 for it. As you go up the line there is more power I had never seen the SA-1000 before but that ad has me drooling!. You might also take a peek at some of the old Akai Receivers I picked up an AA-1030 last year and sometimes just sit and stare at it. Sounds like dirt but looks cool! Just remember sometimes looks aren't everything. Most of what I have would benefit from a good pro going over the tuner section. Gotta take that into consideration too, how much to get it in shape. Good luck, let us know what receiver winds up finding you (You know that is how it happens, they adopt us)
