What's a good pair of bookshelf speakers for an Eico HF-81?

I don't know if these would work for you, but they are great speakers for a small room--JBL S38. They are a small 3-way monitor. I am on my fourth pair right now (for a spare bedroom system)--I keep buying and selling them, but these are staying. They turn up regularly for ~$200 (pair) on a fairly regular basis and are great bang for the buck and size.

They'd certainly like more juice than your Eico can provide, but they excel at bass extension out of a relatively small format.

Good luck!!!

I figured that once you looked into the Fluance that you would dismiss them--they are just another AV speaker desperately in need of a sub.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll certainly look into the JBLs, I'm looking for speakers that wouldn't require me to buy a subwoofer. You also wouldn't be wrong in that I would dismiss the Fluance.

I'll certainly look into the JBLs

I really encourage you to do so. They go down to 45 Hz +/-3dB and extend well below that--read the review. They are only approx 18" X 11" X 13", but weigh outside their league. They are studio monitors, so they are pretty flat in response, and being mirror imaged are great either vertically or horizontally--even upside down to put the woofers close to the ceiling if you want them up out of the way. Front ported, so you can jamb them up against a wall with no issues. I don't know how they have flown "under the radar" for so many years, but that was during the "transitional years" for JBL going over to Harman, so a lot of people "dismiss" those era speakers--they are pretty much identical to the Northridge series in many ways.

Once I looked at that idiot's video of the Fluance and then looked up the freq response charts on them, I knew you'd bail if you saw them--60 Hz and DONE--they don't "roll-off", they just fall off the map.

I have run the S38's on everything from a ~20 wpc tube amp, up to a 375 wpc SS amp, and they did fine on either--they are rated up to 175 w continuous, and can actually take that (if you can).

OK--done "pumping" the JBL's--also check out the Andrew Jones Pioneers and ELAC's, and some of the Polks.

Good Luck and Happy Hunting!!!

BTW--the S38's were MSRP $599/pair new, so $200/pair is kind of a steal.

I had a borrowed pair of JBL L19 that sounded great with my tube amp. I'm currently running KLH Model Sixes.

I have the q100's and they are great but but probably not a good match for you. I also have a pair of Klipsch RB 61ii bookshelf's they are front ported and 95 db sensitivity and 45 hz so the bass is pretty good. I use mine in my bedroom set up and love how they sound. They are selling around $330. I've seen them still new at crutchfield and amazon. Crutchfield has 60 day returns so you have plenty of time to check them out

I'll definitely keep the JBLs in mind once I decide on which speaker I'd go for. I did look into Andrew Jones' Pioneer and Elacs like the Pioneer BS22s and the Elac B5 and B6. Unfortunately, they aren't efficient enough, except for the B6s (I think) since they have an efficiency of 87dB while the others are 85dB, and with these speakers they'd likely perform better with my Pioneer SX-780. Also, with Polk I haven't seen many options that would make me gravitate towards Polk, got any suggestions?

I used mine with Dynaco A25, the smaller Dynaco A10 and the cylindrical Jim Rogers JR149, all were good matches
