What're your favorite old sci-fi movies?

We've been screening great old science fiction movies at my favorite coffee house and it's been a blast. The last two were The Day the Earth Stood Still and Earth vs. the Flying Saucers. I highly recommend both of them. Klaatu in the 1st is very obviously Gene Rodenberry's inspiration for Mr. Spock and the entire movie seems a big influence on Star Trek.

Just wondering if any of you are into 50s/60s sci fi and what some of your faves are.........

Cheers!

The two you mentioned in the first post.

Invaders from Mars
The Thing (the original)
The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms
King Kong (the original, not exactly 50's or 60's)
War of the Worlds

Klaatu Barada Nikto

Careful what you say, TA.

My buddy couldn't believe I saw The Mask in the original 3-D release.

More! More!

Couple other faves I remember-

Caltiki the Immortal Monster

The Giant Behemoth.

"The Time Machine" was pretty cool too

"Things to Come"
"Forbidden Planet"
"Metropolis"
"The Time Machine"
"Robinson Cruesoe on Mars"
"First Men in the Moon"
"The War of the Worlds"

The Blob

WOTW

Kronos

Them

This Island Earth (has the "Interociter")

The Thing (1951)

Anything with "Brain" "Creeping" or "Teenagers" in the title!

In this day of remaking old classics I've always thought "THEM" would make an excellent remake, especially with todays special effects.

Oh yeah! how could I forget the original
"Invasion of the Body Snatchers"

The Cold War was sure good for the movies :bigok:

One thing really struck me in Earth vs. the Flying Saucers.

When they pull the helmet off the alien.

It looks very similar to the now common depiction of aliens- the large bald head, the big slanted eyes, you know what I mean.

This was a long time ago, and not too long after Roswell.

(Insert theramin sounds here.)

"Barbarella" was just stupid, but Jane sure was fun to look at :naughty:

For extra credit name 2 bands whose names are taken from that film. Lots of people will get one of them, but the other's tougher.

I love the film Metropolis. It has been on my personal Top 5 Favorites list for 20 years. I like all of that German Expressionist stuff, and took a still from Metropolis for my avatar here. Their vision of the future is irresistable.

Is Duran Duran one?

One point for the God O' Thunder. Pretty quick on the draw, there big guy.

If nobody gets number 2 by tomorrow I'll post a clue/spoiler in a separate thread.
