What's your favorite old sci-fi movies?

For extra credit name 2 bands whose names are taken from that film. Lots of people will get one of them, but the other's tougher.

I love the film Metropolis. It has been on my personal Top 5 Favorites list for 20 years. I like all of that German Expressionist stuff, and took a still from Metropolis for my avatar here. Their vision of the future is irresistable.

I love Metropolis too.Speaking of Expressionist films, has anyone seen the new "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow"?Great Expressionist cinematography, and the kind of sci fi stuff they used to write about in the 30's and 40's.Very cool flick.

Indeed, she did! Remember the opening credits? Some of the most artful use of letter placement ever conceived.
Heck yeah, she was a major babe, back then. Too bad she resorted to semi-treasonous behavior, not long after, in part to desperately overcome her Barbarella image. :(

As for old sci-fi, would "Planet Of The Apes" and "Logan's Run" qualify? The former is quite thought-provoking (Heston's slightly hammy performance notwithstanding) and has one of the greatest endings in movie history. The latter was just pretty cool, though, by the rules of that city, I'd be dead by now!

And like dewickt, I also like any film (if you want to call some of them that) featured in Mystery Science Theatre 3000- only because they provide such juicy material for Tom Servo and company to hilariously skewer. Now, there's a show I was quite sad to see end.

Cheers.

I'm surprised Kim Hunter would let herself be made up like a monkey. Wasn't she a semi-hottie back in the '50s?. The "Apes" I liked was "Beneath"-the one where they find mutants who have a big-ass nuclear bomb. -Sandy G.

It figgers that Sandy would pipe in with a Rocky Horror reference! Wasted many hours watching that silly flick on Saturday midnights during the early 80's. "There's a light....." (everyone lit their Bic lighters, but I blew their minds with my Star Wars Light Saber!)

Kronos and Metropolis are a couple of my flavorites. Does the last Presidential race count as Sci-Fi? It certainly was a horror at the very least!

not '50's old, but still old...

I think one of my all-time favorites is "Silent Running" with Bruce Dern. Jeez, at the end of it, I usually start getting misty eyed.

Tangentially-related factoid: I was pleased to pick up a pristine copy of the Rocky Horry Picture Show (i.e., movie verion) soundtrack on vinyl at a yard sale this weekend. Woke my son up Sat. AM with "Time Warp"!

Okay 50's you want, black and white, grade "B" specials:

Attack of the 50 Foot Woman (HARRRY!)
The Brain from the Planet Arous (John Agar)
The Crawling Eye (Forrest Tucker)
The Deadly Mantis
The Wasp Woman
The Fly (Vincent Price and Captain Crane)
House on Haunted Hill (Vincent Price)
Gorgo (English people)

In color:

Rodan
The Mysterians

Just remembered a fantastic one, certainly not grade B, but still in B & W.

The Incredible Shrinking Man

Yeah, there were a couple theaters here that gave their "Rocky" patrons those big trash-can liners to put on when the rice, mustard, beer,God-knows-what started flying.-Sandy G.

Lovely PoTAYtoe.......that still cracks me up.

While we're blathering about this, how about the marionette Sci-Fi shows? Am sure most of youse are familiar with all the Gerry Anderson shows like Fireball XL5, Supercar, Thunderbirds, etc. But what of that other show from the early, mid 60's by another producer (I think). Cannot recall the name for the life of me but the story line was something about fighting invisible aliens who became the enemy of a human outpost on their planet thru a mistake/misunderstanding. Pretty heady stuff for a kid's show. I guess having the aliens invisible was either a cheap way out or added some intrigue. For some reason I keep thinking the name of this show was Mysterions or perhaps that was the name of the alien race. Dunno. I hope someone can fill in the blanks!!!

A long-time favorite of mine...

...is:

A Boy and His Dog

Anybody else remember? It starred a VERY young Don Johnson, and a telepathic dog, and was billed as "An R-rated, rather kinky tale of survival."

Laz

Wasn't there a survival dilemma in 'A Boy and His Dog' something along the lines of. Do you eat the dog or the girl to live? Must a really partied through that show.

I remember "A Boy & his Dog". Was channel surfing about 1AM Friday/Sat & came across it-Bizarre !! Another one that is freaky as hell was "The 7 Faces of Dr Lao" which had Barbara Eden-pre-Jeannie-& Tony Randall. Movie was a SERIOUS mind-ph*k at 1 in the AM. Great stop-motion animation, though. Guess THAT'S a lost art now.-Sandy G.

Boy...there ain't no sense in me even giving my thoughts ...I think they're all about covered!!!!!

But deep down inside ..I 'm a Trekker......

Yes! I saw it last weekend. Great movie, awesome special effects. It reminded me alot of Things to Come, art-wise. You know it was done all on computer except the live actors, no sets! It's hard to tell what was real and what wasn't. Bauhauser, you should see it, I think you'll like it.

Alright all you Silent Running fans.......................for all the Quatloos in this dimension, what brand were the grow lights that Lowell used?

I happen to know the correct answer as I own a pamphlet put out by the lighting company which proclaims them to be the "hero of the movie" LOL

Here's an easy one for ya, what were the names of the three robots and how were they operated (in real life....behind the scenes)

Anthony

The robots in Silent Running were Huey, Dewey, and Louie and they were operated by amputees, if I recall correctly. Don't know the name of the gro-lites. Got Duran Duran (the Hunter of the ice and forests of Weyr, was he not?) can't imagine the name of the other, but The Heaven 17 ("Fascist Groove Thing" a minor hit in 1982) got their name from A Clockwork Orange...

A Boy and His Dog was a great Harlan Ellison story. In the story, he didn't eat the girl, he fed her to his injured dog, Blood. I don't remember if they used the last line from the story in the movie, but it was memorable. "She kept asking me "Do you even know what love is?" Sure I know. A boy loves his dog."

Was the show with the Mysterians "Captain Scarlet" by any chance?

Day of the Triffids scared me as a kid (it's probably laughable now).

Destination Moon had great FX for its time.

All time worst has to be Mars Needs Women

I thought "the Enforcers"-the guys-robots-whatever they were-who enforced the law- in "A Boy" were particularly unnerving because I knew guys who looked just like them. -Sandy G.

Add a little social comentary about our possible coservative future with "Farenheight 451" a scarey possibility.
