What's your favourite German word?

To my way of thinking there is that one German word that rises to the top of the word/meaning heap..."gestalt".

The word has many meanings, depending upon how it is used in the different disciplines of study (psychology/history/design, etc.) There is even a "Gestalt Psychology" that explains/describes how the human mind perceives the world.

It is more than the sum of parts to make the whole, as it can also be a group of characteristics that create an end result that is different.

It's one of those particular words that often only the native speaker knows/appreciates the different shades of meaning.

Before I went to Der Fodderlandt in Summer '78, one of my friends Assured me the way to get Germans to speak to me & REALLY love me was to say to 'em-"Kust Du Mein Eisel"... Little did I know that meant "Kiss, please, My Ass.." This dude was even MORE of a Smart Ass than even I am, I shoulda known better. .. I'm lucky none of 'em punched me in the Nose, I spose.. One of the Germans finally "Clued Me In"... I was VERY embarrassed...

Has anyone done this already - the longest word in German?

Here it is -

Donaudampfschiffahrtsgesellschaftskapitän

"Danube steamship company Captain"

I love how the German language just bolts lots of words or phrases together. Very utilitarian and practical.

I was thinking of way to state this the other day and couldn't quite come up with the words.

I'm most familiar with German words from military history books and TV documentaries. Here's another example of 'bolting" words together: Panzerkampfwagen, "armoured combat vehicle".

Flugzeugabwehrkanone - antiaircraft gun

Flugzeug - aircraft

Abwehr - against

Kanone - gun (not cannon but gun, a long barreled artillery piece with a high muzzle velocity)

Back in the mid 70s, when I was at McCallie, this one guy had what HE thought was a fancy rig, it was a rather plain, ordinary Toob Marantz, IIRC. But he had this little sign taped on it in "Fractured German" that was funny, & got the rest of us Nincompoops to leave it Alone... It started somewhat thusly-"Achtung ! Nicht fur grabben w/der Mittenhands"" and went from there. it continued that it MIGHT "Exploden zie w/Bangen und Boomen.." Anybody else remember something similar ? I remember I was gonna swipe it, & make a copy on the library copying machine, but I never got A Round Tuit..

Take a look back to my post #67. There's about 30 or more letters that make up this German word. Then try to say it...in ONE breath! :D
