which JBL or Infinity bookshelf for dynamic rock?

For my next speaker quest I'm looking for more dynamic "rock and roll" speakers and looking for opinions about Infinity vs JBL bookshelf size - ideally no larger than a pair of Large Advents. I currently "east coast" laid back sound speakers - ADS L710 and Large Advents.

How would JBL L100's or Infinity Qb's compare? Which of those 2 would you choose for primarily progressive rock? What about other JBL's or Infinities of this size?

They will be driven by a Marantz 2275.

Infinity Qb's ten times out of ten for me, but its purely personal preference..I love prog, but the choice would hold for any and all types of music:yes:

infinity rs-6s are great (8',mid dome,EMIT) and can be had very reasonably.
Polk monitor 7 is a great choice , too....as are dahlquist DQM series(6,7,8)

jbl l100 sound lively and punchy...but i don't think they're quite as accurate as the
afforementioned speakers , i'd go so far as to call them -colored-

Roughly as big as a large Advent, eh? For punchy rock, eh? I'd look for JBL 4313(B) or L166, or maybe even L100s, or L65s, or 4312s or 4311s, or L112s, or L96s, or L26/36, or......:scratch2::D
Also, I haven't heard them yet, but the LSR6332 look like they might be pretty special. But imagine they ain't cheap.

If your budget won't allow JBL, then yes, the Infinity Q series and RS series ain't bad at all.

JBL 4412A or 4412. IMHO, better woofer than the 4311. Basically a more modern L112 with a titanium tweeter. The "A" model is usually reasonable because they're covered in a workhorse vinyl veneer; no wood. Alternately, the 4410/A (10" version) is a good choice. Exact same cabinet size as the 12". Some prefer them to the 12" in the same box.

I just re-foamed a pair of Infinity RS4001 today and will play them for the first time tomorrow. If that's the RS series being recommended, I'd be surprised if their stamped-frame woofers will stand up to any of my JBLs. But then they were free! :thmbsp:

X+ with a big circle around the 4313's, they are a mile ahead of L100's.

The Quantum 5 and Quantum Jr are 12" 3 way bookshelves that sound very good for all types of music.

I didn't dig infinity Qas, the Qb filled in what I felt was a midrange hole in the Qa- asking the infinity's EMIT to meet with the woofer and work out the midrange wasn't happening.

The Qb added a midrange and things evened out.

I wasn't fond of the JBL L100s and a few other offerings and would probably look at the other models the folks above have mentioned.

Sounds like an aggressive, forward speaker is what you'd like- something noticeably different than your east coasters. If I had to make a quick judgement call, though I personally would prefer the Infinitys, I think the JBLs might be more your goal.

Bookshelf? Not a chance I'd attempt prog rock on a bookshelf.

SpeakerLab 7's will produce for YES, ELP, the synth bass is torture on many speakers not just bookshelf types. DQM-9's work too but you need a lot more power behind them.

...to the heart of the sunrise...

I have lots of bookshelf speakers, none of which have ever been used on an actual bookshelf! They all seem to work fine on short stands on the floor, or tilted, or whatever it takes to get the tweets aimed at the listener's ears. Even those JBL "monitors" intended for soffit mounting work well out in a room and some of those weigh over 50 pounds so that would have to be a substantial shelf, anyway.

"Bookshelf" is more of a size category and if that's what you're saying won't play rock, then maybe you've been listening to the wrong "small" speakers. :thmbsp:

I have a pair of JBL L26's right next to a pair of Large Advents. I love to switch between them all the time. Both are great two way speakers but the L26's really love the electric guitar. They are also more efficient than the large advents.

yes, I meant "bookshelf" as a size classification. Agree that few of these would actually fit on a bookshelf! I have all of mine on stands.

Progger7, what lico is really trying to tell you is just build an eWave project. :thmbsp: After all Zilch is just up the road from you.

hmmm...I've seen threads about "eWave" but never dove into them. What does this mean exactly? its a type of DIY speaker I assume.
