Which obscure artist would you recommend?

i'll take Flamingo or Teenage Head over Shake, (although the title cut is essential). Give me the Roy A. Loney Groovies!

A band called the Questionairs did a cover of Teenage Head in the early 90s. Pretty good record. I have the CD somewhere around here.

well as far as prog rock... rare bird and atlantis philharmonic.
rock- mink deville, tuff darts, feelies, perez prado..dmz

Eva Cassidy.

Great voice. All you have to do is listen to 'Over the Rainbow' on her 'Songbird' CD.

I don't know if she is currently considered obscure, but she was obscure before she passed away in '96. I have found myself introducing her to people in recent yrs, which makes me think 'maybe she is still obscure'.

Funny you mentioned her. The guy I mentioned in my first post, Jim, recommended only one artist: Eva Cassidy.

I'd have to nominate Danny O'Keefe. One vastly-overplayed hit single aside, Danny has a large body of excellent work to draw on...and continues to record. Nice new CD released this past spring.

Patty Griffin. Her first album "Living With Ghosts" was such an inspiration to me that I've given out about a dozen copies to family and friends, yet they never seem to take the time to really listen to it or appreciate it. Anyway, I'm still forever grateful to my friend Joel who turned me on to her. He was the manager at my hometown's local music store that shut down when Best Buy moved in next door.

It is always hard to say who is the "best" you have ever heard. Everybody has different taste and there are so many types of music and every body has there own favorites, but she is arguably the best singer songwriter I have ever heard. That album "Living With Ghosts" is one of her best if not the best. The next album she did after that one "Flaming Red" was a lot different (hard rock) than "Living With Ghosts" (more folk withe power) but equally as impressive. Her lyrics and voice are amazing, just does what music is suppose to do, powerfully and emotional, and what a story teller.:thmbsp:

Don't know exactly how obscure these are, but a couple of others you don't hear a lot about relative to the talent they have are Gillian Welch and Mary Gauthier.

For nuttiest humor: Robyn Hitchcock
For the absolute most bizarre: Sun Ra and His Cosmic Jazz Love Arkestra

Yea, she's a keeper. Here's some quick access sites for an intro:

For decades, Judy Garland owned "Over the Rainbow". I think Eva now owns it.

BTW, this is a good thread that allows us AK'ers to be introduced to relatively unknown talent on the planet. I want to review the previous entries and listen to their suggestions.

I'll mention 2 cd's I like. Maybe not obscure but not exactly mainstream either.

Andreas Vollenweider - White Winds (instrumental)
Courtney Pine - Closer to Home (jazz {sax} with a jamaican flavor)

Roach Bros. (aka Rouch Bros) --- couple of farmers in rural Indiana who converted a barn into a recording studio

Not sure if he’s real obscure—he’s having something of a career renaissance—but how about Rodney Crowell? The guy has been in the shadows for a long time, despite being one of this country’s brightest and most perceptive songwriters. I’m listening to his latest, Sex and Gasoline, now, and my head is shaking in amazement at how this guy isn’t a household name.

Obscure because they're new, but I like what I hear on their debuts.

Wil Blades ~ Sketchy
Melody Gardot ~ Worrisome Heart
