Which Yamaha Speakers?

Right now I have NS-670's and I'm looking to expand...

Looking at mainly Yamaha
I want something in the range of 6-8 Ohms
I want 3 way speakers
I want the potentiometers for mids and highs
Probably somewhere up to 150 input watts lower is no issue
I probably missed some obvious models below, but that is the basic criteria in what i am looking for, what models does the AK community think I should maybe look into? Here is what I have looked at and you guys can recommend what models you think are the best. I am open to models other than the ones below, that is just some I am possibly interested in. Thanks in advance! :)
I know, NS-1000's are great, but I cant spend $2000-$5000
I have looked at more NS-670's, NS-690's in the original, MkII, and MkIII NS-590 NS-890 NS-500M
NS-655 NS-200M NS-2000 and NS-600

I have the 670's right now and they are really clear and crisp, but they reach low too. are the 590/890 be on the tweets and mids on the 890's?
I have been wondering if 590s would complement my 670's really well since the 670's have domes for mids and the 590's have cones for mids. But the 890's have both dome and cone mids... have you gotten the chance to see either of them? I wonder if the cone mids were decent or a catastrophe?

Welcome to AK and the Yamaha forum.

I've had NS-690 mk1's for a few years and they are indeed d*mn fine speakers. I have a super clean pair of NS-1000x's as well and still enjoy the 690's. The 690's are very forgiving while the 1000x's demand nothing less than a flawless source. For kicking back and just enjoying a record the 690's are your friend.

I would be interested in the NS-1000(x) if I had that kind of money to spend I run a Yamaha CA-600 amp with .1 of THD and it is really clear, so that wouldnt be an issue, but 2-4 large is just more than I can do(as im sure it is with most people)

and thanks for the warm welcome

I forget what is the difference between the NS-1000 & the NS-1000M?
and do you think the 1000's are better and by how much compared to the 690's
also I am quite impressed with the 96 dB sensitivity of the 670 and 690(Mk I)
I have not see any other yamahas that come close to that. The closest I have seen is 91 dB. It works well for me with a CA-600 Amp since it only outputs 30 WPC, but with the 670's I can theoretically output 111 dB at 32 WPC. Have you seen any others by Yamaha that match or come closer to the sensitivity of the 670/690I's?

In all reality, find yourself any version of the 690. They can be had fairly cheap. I started with 670’s, they were okay. 690 was pretty drastic difference. I now have 690mkii and ns-1000m. The 1000’s are in the main stereo, 690’s reside in the front room with the ca-2010/ct-1010 for movie duty. All are efficient, all sound good.

670 is just to small of a speaker in my humble opinion.

1000m/1000 differences are one is ebony (home version, they look better) and the black is the studio version. They are both better than the 690, Plus they cost more. More technology went into them.

As efficient as the 690's are they do benefit from increased power. I initially ran mine on a CA-800 which was cool but later just for kicks I hooked them up to my C-4/B-5 combo and then holy sh*t they sounded fantastic. Percussion, voicing, image, everything popped into place. I think some have referred to them as the poor man's NS-2000...I plan on picking up a pair of 2000's but I'd still never part with the 690's. Too good, too easy.

@808_state thanks, I couldn't tell if those little deal off to the side were pots or what they might have been

They're similar to the 1000x in that you might use a coin or disk to turn them. The thing holding me back on a pair of 2000's is the weight. Hauling a pair of 1000x's up three flights was heavy enough.

Im held back by the 2-3 large price tag...I would love it if I could get a pair for 4-6 hundred, but I dont see that happening.

I just got a pair of 690's MK I for 180 but both tweeters were dead, but got a pair for 103 bucks and now have a great sounding
set of speakers.

So I also vote for the 690's . If you find a pair with dead tweeters you can use yours from the 670's. They use the same Tweets.

Nashou
