White van guys also sell tools. I've seen them selling bench presses, saws, drills etc
 
Gotta love the "Audiofile" brand. I have an audio file. It's where I keep my service manuals and brochures. ;)

White Van weren't sold new at a brick and mortar store.
Those mega 3 day stereo sales-outlet liquidation for sure.
Lot's of 70-80's 'big box' stereo had entry level speakers they sold with their packages the put in the Sunday newspapers.
Can't recall Stereo Worlds (now Best Buy) Schaack had Omega-DLK was the upgrade.
DlK was pretty good-still holds up as well as any JBL's of the same size, vintage-probably more accurate.
And much less expensive.
Most of these you can tweak-put good caps (Not Dayton's-something decent) and make them sound good.
Usually the biggest issue was the tweeter-unless they had a ribbon, or AMT.
Some of the early domes were not too bad if they didn't ring.
The DLK 1.5's were the sweet spot.
Sealed 2x*" woofer bass box.
Axe the cone tweet-through in a ESS Power Ring AMT-redesign the crossover -with good caps, and you really have a sweet and accurate speaker that can play as loud as any of the classic JBL "disco" speakers-and sound way more accurate and musical.
For about 1/4 of the asking price these days of the disco boxes.

Actually it's an 8 year old thread.
And "can be updated" is right there in the title so new WV companies can be named as they appear, to warn others.
And IMO there is/was a difference between "store brand" speakers and white van speakers. As you mentioned, some store brands weren't that bad.
Store brands probably had a decent spliff, but nothing like the outrageous "MRSP" posted on WV packaging. Store brand didn't depend on lying and greed to make their sales.
 
Still see them advertised locally on Gumtree (Australia's version of Craigslist). Some wanting a lot, trying to recoup what they spent I guess. A set of brand new, never opened, made in Germany, selling cheap, Deutsch Akustik on there at the moment.

Yep-like any other snake oil sales tactics-they rely on potential customers greed. If it sounds to good.....buyer beware.
 
I don't understand why JVC did not sue Japan Victory Components for obvious trademark violations...

I know. Must be class d-minus amps. I see asking prices between $220 and $2000 on a quick Google search. No idea what they sell for in the Lowes parking lot.
$2000 is less that $1 a watt. What a deal!
But wait, there's more!!!
At $220 it's about 11 cents per watt.
