Who is running "Full Range"?

Right, in a box, a speakers will roll off at some rate and then flatten out when the wavelengths start to exceed the baffle dimensions. With an OB, rather than flattening out, they just rolloff below that frequency. BSC wouldn't work well, but EQ is often employed. Or very high Q drivers.

Mike was gracious enough to allow me to come over to his fine basement (a very misleading term) and listen to his 99dB efficient Audio Nirvana full-rangers.
A lot of dynamics and more extension in the highs than a 12 inch driver should be capable of.
Driven by a sweet SE tube amp they were impressive enough that I will probably be trying out the 8 or 10 inch version for myself.

I've always wanted to try the Audio Nirvanas and I bet they are excellent.

For a long while I dismissed FR drivers over 8 inches until I tried the 12 inch Eminence Beta 12LTA. With the addition of a simple phase plug they made a believer out of me. At almost 98 dbs and for $75 each they are an incredible value. Plus they will also go surprisingly high. I believe the 12 inch AN's are double the price of the Betas.

Tekton and Zu take full advantage of the larger Eminence FR drivers and
I believe the Hammer clones use the Beta 12LTA as does Emerald Physics.

If you look at many of the consoles of yesteryear, large HE FR speakers were the norm. I'm currently experimenting with two 10 inch Zenith alnico drivers in open baffle. The Zeniths are from the 1950's, have no conventional surrounds to rot and sell for peanuts on ebay.

I have a pair of the now discontinued Pioneer BOFU FR drivers awaiting a future project. PE sells BOFU clones for under $20. The BOFU is a N. Pass favorite and I hope to use it in his TL plans.

No full rangers at the moment but soon I'm hoping to have the dilemma of choosing between the Alpair 10.3 and 10P:yes:

Ah, I see. :) Did they turn-out good anyway?

I'm also looking at some Mark Audio drivers for an upcoming desktop project, battling it out versus Fostex in WinISD for a while...

I thought they were excellent sounding, and this before the hundreds of hours of break in recommended by the manufacturer. I built the small monitor versions with rear ports. In hindsight for the place I was using them I should have placed the ports on the front. I may at some point buy them again and try them in the larger floor standing cabinets. By then Mark Audio will probably have something better out though.

Apparently the 7 and 10 are significantly better sounding than the 12P, at least through the midrange up. By some accounts the 10 even has deeper bass. The 12P was specifically targeted at those wanting higher efficiency.

I listen near field so I'm thinking the 10 will be the sweet spot for me:scratch2:

10.3???? I didn't know Mark was working on a 10.3 or is this just the one with the suspension arrestor? I too am currently without fullrange drivers at the house. Although I'm still running Alpair 7.3's here at the office and my Dad is running 10.2's in his office as well. I'll be looking forward to picking up more of Mark's drivers once they start becoming stocked by US dealers.
 
Yes, the one with the arrestor. Although he has done some work and extended the high end so it now competes with the current production 7, but with deeper bass.

I'm a little confused about the upcoming models. There might even be 3 different versions; 10.3 (metal cone), 10P (paper), 10MAOP (metal cone with special treatment). My experience with the 12P has definitely left me wanting to try more of Marks drivers.
 
Mark will ship you 1 single pair to the 'States but it will cost you. I had him price me out a pair of 7.3MAOP and some 10.2MAOP and the prices were drastically higher than what I was used to with his drivers. So much so that I don't see myself trying them in the near future...or at all.

As you recall I too have had a pair of 12P drivers. They weren't my cup of tea at the time. Although I will say this. I heard the 12P in Fonken cabinets at a buddy's house who used them with room correction and EQ and was absolutely floored. Though they're about 91db efficient they need a bigger amp. His were run off of a Teddy Pardo DAC, Teddy Pardo ST60, and with dual Rythmik servo subs. I can honestly say if I had gotten that level of performance from my 12P's they would still be at my house. Not sure how he did it, but what I heard blew my mind. That experience ranks in the top 3 I have ever had with music. They're worth buying, but need a lot of EQ work to get the best out of them and also need a larger enclosure than a small bookshelf. The resistive ports of the Fonken cabinet shook hands real well.

Yes, even with their improved efficiency they were much more dynamic sounding with power behind them than the 3.5 watt 2A3 amp I was using. The new owner of my drivers probably even has them broken in by now!

I've always wanted to try one of those Onken cabs:scratch2:

I'm guessing that one can make the enclosure a tad larger and tune it a tad lower than what would be optimal, so that the high-aspect vents' resistance damps the peaking at Fb that is introduced. This should provide fair extension with a shallow slope and very good control. Something I want to try eventually as well.

Phase plugs installed. These speakers are great for my little office. I listen to them all day long (I work from home).
