Who is running "Full Range"?

I've been contemplating building a pair of "full range" speakers, using a high-quality 6" or 8" driver in a transmission line or ported enclosure. I'm looking for a tall-slender-deep profile. Considering Fostex, Fountek, or Seas for a driver. I think it would be an interesting study to see how the lack of a crossover influences the sound. Then low frequencies could be manipulated by adjusting the port and internal dampening. I know I'd sacrifice frequencies 15k and above off-axis, but some of these drivers actually have very favorable off axis response by using phase plugs or whizzer cones. Old school, but effective.

Thoughts? Who's running full range?

I have a pair of these speakers, that I put into an open baffle and they are pretty darn good! 50-18K is quite full-range.

They may get you what you want, without great expense and once you've gotten the experience - then you may wish to move to the top echelon.

I run two pair of full-range on the garage system. Sometimes while I'm out there puttering on a project, I'm amazed how good they can sound. Neither pair even has a name on them, but judging from aesthetics, I'd guess them to be 40-45 years old. Both pair are 8-inch drivers. I bump the treble up a half a notch and I'm quite happy.

I have a couple of Fostex based speakers, FE126e in Ron horns (BLH) and FE108 Sigma in small BR cabs.

The drivers are mounted in supra baffles. It helps with baffle step, allowing a better presentation of midrange frequencies. It is not the only shape that can be used. Check out Dave and Chris's efforts:Ron horns

Nice Utah 12" driver with a whizzer cone in a ported cab. Very nice sound, does the single driver no XO magic well. Lacks top end. Fun speaker. Would like to maximize the cab setup some day and maybe add a super tweeter.

I have a pair of folded voight pipes in my garage running the Pioneer B20-BUFU driver and my daughter and I built a pair of folded voight pipes running the Radio Shack 40-1354 driver.

They both sound very good but in both cases, I used the treble to bring up the highs and I use the Bass Extension to bring up the low bass.

I have a pair of Audio Nirvana Super 10s (IIRC) in ported enclosures. I like them. I don't love them, but they do some things extraordinarily well for the cost.
 
These were my main speakers for several years. They use Fostex Sigma 108Z's in a back-loaded Buschorn design. While not perfect,
they do many things very well, notably piano sounds full and natural and most voices sound natural. Placement is critical with them.
Corner placement will yield the best bass, but you can't get them too close to the wall or it will mess the sound up.
Nowadays they spend their time as my AV speakers. The tiny 3 watt amp in my JVC TV powers them just fine.

I use/used 3", 4", 4.5", 6", 8" and 10" drivers in Karlson, aperiodic, bass reflex, BLH and OB enclosures. There are lots of good vintage drives out there. As for new stuff, I recommend the Fostex FF-WK lineup, they are good drivers that can work in simple bass reflex enclosure or more exotic stuff. I have the FF85WK in small BLH and the FF225WK in a small Karlson. An online audio friend has built Metronomes for both FF105WK and FF125WK and reported success. The FF225WK does need some help on top, ~10kHz and up. The FF165WK may too, but I never heard it. I also have the old FF125K in a small reflex, very good driver. Some have compared its sound to the FE-Sigma series.

Lots of fun to be had with fullrange drivers.

You might want to consider the MarkAudio drivers. I have a pair of CHP-70, gen. 2's in a slotted box. I find them quite amazing. The imaging/soundstage is great, as it is with a lot of full-range designs. The clarity of the MarkAudio speakers is one of my favorite aspects of it. The bass is extremely good, in spite of the CHP-70 being only a 4"-ish driver. I've had Fostex 127's in a fonken and found them too bright. I've also done several TangBand full range designs, which I like. But for me, the best bang for the buck is my MarkAudio speakers. I'm trying to decide my next full-range speaker project, and it WILL be a MarkAudio. Based on my experience, I would recommend the MarkAudio line very highly.

Mark Audio A12.2p's in "Super Pencil" boxes for my main system. A6p drivers in mMarKen boxes for the computer.
