Why are they worth so much?

I think scarcity also plays a role. Bad sounding speakers can be uncommon too.

Kabuki PX speakers were popular barracks fare for G.I.s in the 1970s, along with the larger silver face receivers. Vinyl and cassette tape ruled.

I remember these in the barracks in Germany in the early 80s.I can only attribute these prices to extreme nostalgia or not very knowledgeable to put it kindly.

Kabuki doesn't necessarily means low value.
This is the Legit vintage Pioneer kabuki.
White van kabuki is a different story.

Saying that, I don't familiar with this particular model.
Seller claims "Wooden Cabinets", but to me they don't look like a true walnut veneer.
They look like 1980's speakers and, having experience with similar speakers of this era, I would say this is not a true veneer, but rather a vinyl film.

If this is, indeed, not a true veneer, I would say these speakers should be worth very little.
As a collector, I don't mess with vinyl film speakers. And with plastic trim/drivers.
I checked eBay and I don't see any other sales that support high valuation of this model. I would pass on any price.

I think the especially over-the-top appearance and the LED display gives these market value they might not otherwise have.

With all the flashy silver plastic horns, plastic vents, script logos, and vinyl covers, they look white van to me, I wouldn't have them in my house; yukk! Just my opinion...
