Why do gin and tonics taste so danged good

Short on funds this week so I looked for something cheaper than the usual Bombay.
Picked up some Gilbey's London Dry Gin at $12.99 for a LIter and honestly, not bad at all with Polar Tonic.
Tried a small sip on its own and still OK. Maybe I'm just not that picky. :dunno:
Doesn't seem as heavy on the Juniper and botanicals as some other Gins.
Might try a martini tomorrow, just need to pick up some Vermouth.

I do not drink anymore but I sure do miss having a gin and tonic. My problem is I can not just have one or two.
I liked Tanqueray and the Tanqueray 10 was really good.

Here is something that would be interesting to try in gin Tasmanian Pepperberry. (Tasmannia lanceolata) This is a Pepper like spice that grows in Tasmania it has a mild peppery Juniper like taste.

Here in Tas we have a very robust booze industry including world award winning whisky and gin but I'm not sure of its availability in the world market.
The Tas Pepperberry is being used by a few .....just Google gin/Tasmania for a full disclosure.
Personally much as I would like to sample a few/all of them I'm a complete DIY bloke. Sshhh :whip:

On a different note, the bush pepper goes great with an omelette or scrambled eggs. :)

We have the Brits to thank for gin and tonic. Tonic water was invented to make the bitter tasting quinine ( a malaria fighting drug ) more palatable. With the addition of gin it became so wildly popular it actually helped hold the British empire together.

We have an area in Columbia, SC called Quinine Hill. It got it's name because it was above the mosquito line and living there was said to be as good as taking quinine.

If you need an excuse for the next gin and tonic you can always say it's for medicinal purposes. :D

As I mentioned above go back and read the broadsheet accounts, and the debates in Parliament circa 1750 about the Gin mills. It wasn’t just “rotgut” it was “rot out your brain”.

Queen Gin: Oh! what is is this that runs so cold about me?
A dram! — a dram! — a large one or I die.
’Tis vain [drinks hastily]
O, O, Farewell [dies]

Mob: What, dead drunk or dead in earnest?

Hello neighbor, which part of this humid armpit (AKA, Columbia) do you live in? I am in Forest Acres.

I am currently partaking of a Gin & Tonic, yum.

Hi neighbor,

I live in new Harbison near the mall. You gotta go to Total Wine and pick up a bottle of Hadley & Sons Gin. Don't know if Green's has it but It's 92 proof made in North Charleston and smooth as silk. Best part is it's much cheaper than the premium brands and better IMO.

Quinine Hill is in Forest Acres.

Thanks for the tip. Yes Quinine Hill is on my way to Morganelli’s, my neighborhood liquor store.

Just read that because of Brexit several countries that export juniper and other herbals for gin may boycott in protest. Which means gin prices will go up drastically

This will probably only affect Gin made in the U.K.

I am sitting in our modest mountain cabin after a nice ride, drinking a Gin & Tonic.

Yes but, just look at all the boutique going NA being made here in the U.S. and other countries.

I agree yet some are quite pricey. I occasionally buy St Augustine gin but it's 30 for a fifth. For another 3 bux I can buy Beefeaters at 1,75l. Still I would like to support the US boutique makers
