Why do I like Queen? Do you?

If you've got a library near you, try and see if they have Move It On Over to lend. IMO it's George's best album and one of the better "white blues" LPs of the era.

They didn't have that one but I placed on hold one from 2011 and one from 2008. I'll check out his recent stuff. Lots of guitarists really age well with time.

I'm 51 and saw Queen 3 times in my youth. The last time was in Germany just shortly after John Lennon was killed. I know of very few male singers who could express emotion the way that Freddie did and when he sang Imagine as a tribute to Lennon, there wasn't a dry eye in the house. It was the single most memorable concert moment of my youth.

Live at Wembley stadium has to be one of the greatest live rock band performances of all time. Towards the middle of the show they slow things down a bit and when Freddie gets the entire stadium singing Love Of My Life, it just gives me goosebumps. It was an incredible performance. I still get goosebumps watching this. It is my fave moment of the show. I used to have the same Ovation 12 string that Brian is playing here too.

Is This The World We Created....another great one from that show

A lot of my buds in the late 70's were afraid to admit that they liked Queen but I was always kind of my own person...at least when it came to music. One parting thought about "We Will Rock You" being in your face....it was indeed. But I don't think it could have became the sort of sports anthem played at 1000's of sporting events had it not been. I'd say it is probably the #1 stadium anthem of all time. That said, I don't think the band was pushy or in your face at all...theatrical yes. I saw many of the big bands of that era and they were my favorite.

RIP Freddie Mercury

I was a BIG Queen fan in the mid 80s (saw them at Wembley and Knebworth on the last tour) and I'm getting back into to them in a major way now I've moved back to vinyl . . in fact just picked up Jazz and The Works today second hand.

When I liked them as a teen it was pretty uncool as they were 'old rockers' and simply not miserable enough to be serious artists in post-Thatcher Britain. But even some of my 'cool' classmates had to admit they stole the show at Live Aid . . and therein lies the appeal to me. Queen rarely tried to be cool, as in subscribing to the current tastes - they just played music an put on a hell of a show. As music chained to the zeitgeist became old news overnight, Queen just carried on always one step away from the fashion but never far from the pulse.

Now looking back without the filter of 'what's hot right now', their music seems smart, powerful, eminently well performed and just downright fun . . . something which seems to be the key to Freddie's onstage persona. I think many short lived bands fail to understand that above all else 'It's only rock and roll'

The first time I heard Queen was in my High School cafeteria the week Night At The Opera was released.

When Bohemian Rhapsody started the whole cafeteria went silent. At the conclusion, we gave it a Standing Ovation.

Needless to say I ran out and bought the album that afternoon.

Anything before Flash was great....

My first concert was Queen at the Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver B.C. circa 77 or 78. The put on one hell of a live show.:thmbsp:

they were kind of confused I guess, they released a Jazz album but left out the Jazz Music part, maybe the printer got it mixed up and it was too expensive to fix, or their manager was on vacation.

Wow, that's s lot of love for Queen. Thanks for all the great responses.

So Queen was one of those band I didn't discover in the 70's. But I've really gotten into them over the past 10 years. A lot of their videos on youtube are excellent. Now it's on to the thrift store.

PS: A good friend of mine has a huge LP collection that includes a bunch of Queen LPs, including "A night at the opra".

Far OUT!

I was really digging NEWS OF THE WORLD as a HS soph. WE WILL... and WE ARE... were the popular tracks but ther were soooo many other good tunes on that album. Check it out!

Since I'm coming to this thread late, I'll try to cover all my bases at once:

1 - Love Queen. Have ever since the first time I heard their music on a jukebox. Have just about all their albums and I listen to them quite regularly.

2 - I don't get the concept of 'guilty pleasure' music. I like what I like, and I don't feel one bit bad about it.

Innuendo is quite good. I think Freddy's health was seriously failing by the time the album was recorded, and if that's true, then the performances are damn near miraculous...

Innuendo was indeed the last album that Freddy recorded, he died ten months after it was released. I gather that he would work for an hour or two until exhausted, then break until he had recuperated enough to carry on. I think miraculous is a perfect word to describe his voice on this recording.

I think Quint's suggestion is a good one. I also like the live one he put out, the first one, from the 80's(I think). I think it has One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer on it, though.:D
I do know where you were going with the impression people get of him. The drinking songs were just an easy thing for classic rock radio to latch onto. I think a lot of people, me included, have a similar feeling with Queen. I really should listen to the albums some time, instead of just the hits.

Cheers.

any band with a PhD astrophysicist for a lead guitarist is ok by me.
not faves, but I enjoy their hits, and some of their misses too.
'39 may well be my favorite Queen song.

I think Brian May is one of the most underappreciated guitarists in rock. As several posters have mentioned, you have do dig a bit deeper than the "We Will Rock You" and other radio hits. some of my Brian May faves:

Brighton Rock
Now I'm Here
Stone Cold Crazy
It's Late
Tie Your Mother Down
White Man
Sweet Lady

I love how these threads make me dust off some of these old classics and crank 'em up! :music:

This reminds to point you all in the direction of Brian's 'Starfleet Project' EP if you ever come across it. Just a bit of studio fun with Brian, Eddie Van Halen and some other top level session guys.

I thought I was kinda meh with them. I picked up the latest remaster of A Night at The Opera and was amazed. I really like Queen and their best albums are masterpieces. Buying more!

Picked up a really, really nice copy of "Move It On Over" on Rounder Records today at my local record store. Haven't listened to it yet. It was in the Blues section.

Let us know what you think. My preferences may not be yours, but I've always found the album to be a solid recommendation for someone looking for good-time party blues. Good score! :thmbsp:
