Why do you hate LCD/Plasma

Firstly, I don't have a large enough TV room to sit 20' back...

That being said, and irregardless, I have not seen anything that beats a good CRT - period. period...

Truthfully, the 'best' picture I have yet seen is on my grandparents 1960 or so Zenith - yup - mostly round, with the top and bottom cut off - but the screen has the best colors (oh, lets say 'realistic'), and it's sooo easy on the eyes. Kind of a greenish when off, and takes a bit to warm up, but the picture is truly amazing. Shortly after that time, they changed the phosphorus, and picture quality when downhill, and has never returned...

I think it is much like the audio end of things - big efficient tube gear from the 50's or 60's - maybe not the 'most' accurate - but sounds the best.

Just because a technology is old, does not make it inferior. I see the HD NFL on my sisters new 3K$ dlp - hmmmm... better? I'm not so easily sold...

I'll stick with CRT till something truly 'better' comes out - not just something the salesman 'says' is better.

got a new panasonic 50" plasma gave my mom my old rear projection, she gave her sister her old rca cart. all very happy.

Has anyone taken a look at the new LG 32" plasma?

Not HD, but possibly better than the 480i I am using now. I will probably take a look when the weather is better.

I have simple economic rules, if I buy it new, I buy it local if it's available.

An honorable way to go, I do say.

However, personally, I won't pay $30-50 plus tax plus gas to go get it for something I can get elsewhere for $5-6 plus shipping delivered to my door.

Different strokes....:thmbsp:

Yikes... sit 20ft back? That's where HD comes in. You don't need to sit 20ft back - you don't WANT to sit 20ft back. In fact, if you do sit that far back, HD is a waste - unless maybe you have like a 100" or bigger screen...

Best you've seen is a 1960's color set? Huh... interesting.

You're certainly entitled to like what you like, but if a 1960 color TV looks better than a decent Plasma, etc. I contend there is a serious setup/calibration/signal quality issue. Just my 0.02...

But I will say this; I don't think they'll last as long as a CRT.
My neighbor has an RCA that I bought in 1988. 20 years old and
still going strong.

My Hitachi Ultravision LCD has a nicer picture.
But where will it be in 20 years? Hmmm?

Landfill, would be my guess.

I found that post to be strange, too. 20 feet back? Maybe that is why the DLP did not look very good.

They make DVDs that can really help with the setup. If the color is not natural, the issue is probably that the TV that he saw was in torch mode.

I haven't seen an LCD or plasma with a good picture yet. Maybe they are configured wrong, but the TV's I see in the stores look like ass! The colors are not right, there are tons of noisy artifacts, and the motion is un-natural and makes me nauseous. The only thing that looks good on them is animated stuff. Digital has a looong way to go imo. That being said, I'd still take an LCD if I could get it for 300ish, just to get the TV up on the wall and out of the way of my audio gear. I'm way more of an audiophile than videophile. If it was up to me, I wouldn't own a TV.

Which one is better (LCD, Plasma, CRT)? I don't hate any of them.

I think it depends on the model.

I think most Plasma's have that milky look compared to the newest LCD, but the better plasma's look very good.

I was at ABT Electronics recently and they had one wall of LCD's and right next to it was a wall of Plasmas. All of the plasma's looked faded and milky in comparison to the LCDs. No one was paying any attention to the plasmas.

However, I've seen plasma's and LCDs that were picture perfect depending on the source.

As for motion blur, I see it on all tv's regardless of technology and think its an artifact of MPEG rather than the TV. For years I watched this motion blur on my CRT when there was any movement. It was very distracting. I still see this on all the TV's regardless of technology. I also see it on my computer when watching movies and this was either on CRT or LCD. I also notice the motion blur less on HDTV.

As for black level, my LCD has a greater black level than any plasma, but that is dynamic black level. When the picture is mostly dark, I think the plasma has a better black level, but when it is a mixture of a bright picture with blacks, then the LCD wins hands down.

I don't have a highend CRT TV, but with what I do have, there is no comparison. Plasma and LCD are both better.

I think that there is room for improvement with all technologies and each tecnology has its strengths and weakness. There is no clear winner or loser at this point.

Like hypertone, I am mostly an audio guy, but I love a good tv.
